Role:
The Stamping Die Set-up Technician is responsible for the safe and efficient installation, alignment, and adjustment of stamping dies to ensure optimal press operation and part quality. This technician must possess strong mechanical knowledge, press operation experience, and a solid understanding of die and tooling configurations. Work is performed in accordance with production specifications, quality standards, and company procedures.

Technical Responsibilities & Skills:
Die Setup & Changeover:
- Perform installation and removal of line, progressive, and forms dies using overhead cranes or forklifts
- Align upper and lower die components precisely using dowels, shims, and alignment tools
- Set passline heights and shut heights using manual or electronic controls on the press
- Adjust coil feed systems, pilot releases, straighteners, and conveyors to match die setup
Press Operation Knowledge:
- Operate mechanical and hydraulic stamping presses ranging from 25 to 150 tons
- Configure and operate servo/ air feeds, coil reels, and lubrication systems
- Perform test hits to verify proper die seating and part forming
- Understand tonnage requirements and stroke settings for different materials and parts
Tooling & Die Inspection:
- Conduct pre-run die inspections to ensure cleanliness, sharp edges, and no signs of galling or breakage
- Use feeler gauges, die protection systems, and part ejector sensors to confirm setup readiness
- Collaborate with tool & die team on minor in-press repairs, sharpening needs, or tooling replacements
Quality Control:
- Conduct first-article and in-process inspections using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and go/no-go gauges
- Interpret control plans, part drawings, and GD&T tolerances
- Maintain dimensional accuracy and detect forming issues like burrs, wrinkles, splits, or springback
Documentation & Communication:
- Accurately log setup sheets, run times, part counts, and non-conformances into ERP systems or setup books
- Communicate tooling concerns, press performance, and material-related issues to shift leaders or maintenance
Requirements:
2 years of experience in a metal stamping or press operation environment preferred
- Familiarity with common tooling types (trim dies, form dies, etc.)
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability
- Willingness to cross-train and support other departments during downtime
Qualifications / Skills:
- Read and interpret blueprints, setup instructions, and quality documents
- Knowledge of basic die maintenance and press safety systems (e.g., light curtains, die sensors)
- Comfortable using a range of hand tools, torque wrenches, hoists, and die-setting equipment
- Ability to lift, stand, and perform physical work in a production environment
- Ability to use and understand calipers and micrometers
