JOB TITLE: Director of Environmental and Health Services

REPORTS TO: SVP of HR SHIFT: As needed

DIVISION: 3 FLSA STATUS: Exempt

MIN. EDU LEVEL: Bachelor's degree in related field SALARY GRADE LEVEL: G20

SUMMARY:

This individual will provide professional knowledge and expertise in the administration and support of all environmental, health and safety programs and will ensure compliance with regulatory agency guidelines. Maintain records of all plant safety information, manage safety investigations, inspections, and safety training; prepare reports required by Company policy and governmental regulations. Stay abreast of environmental and safety regulations.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision of assigned staff (4). Indirect supervision providing general direction to Production Trainer staff (28), floor management, QA, Training and Maintenance Staff, Safety Committees (35), and Health Services staff (8).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local legislation and codes governing environmental, health, and safety.
  • Assessing risk potential across the organization and ensuring proper signage, guarding, protection measures, and training are in place.
  • Develop internal policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulations and guidelines.
  • Interfacing with all regulatory agencies and internal staff regarding inspections, audits, incident reports, responses, and corrective actions (e.g., OSHA, EPA, USDA, DOT, INS, CDC, etc.).
  • Assist with the Process Safety Management Program, including three-year Compliance Audit, Monthly Meetings, and review of Incident Investigations, MOC, etc.
  • Establishing protocols, overseeing and conducting accident investigations, data analysis, and recurrence prevention programs and procedures.
  • Managing and tracking all safety violations and maintaining necessary records (OSHA, etc.).
  • Participating in and/or directing the Safety Committees (including bi-weekly meetings, safety walks, fire watches, UCRs, etc.).
  • Designing safety and compliance training for all employees and ensuring delivery to keep the facility compliant.
  • Monitoring all current information on regulations and requirements related to environmental and hazardous waste/materials, including training and monitoring (e.g., NPDES, Air Permit, RCRA, Land Apply, EIQ, HAZWOPER, etc.).
  • Directing industrial hygiene, occupational, and general safety programs to ensure a safe environment that complies with safety standards, including Noise Surveys and Air Monitoring.
  • Working with others to evaluate new safety equipment and management of necessary PPE.
  • Work with company insurance broker for annual audits conducted by the underwriter.
  • Work with Human Resources Team on SMETA -4P audits.
  • Overseeing DOT-required programming (e.g., driver certs/recerts, random drug screens, etc.).
  • Work with vendors for annual inspections and repairs of alarm system and fire suppression system.
  • Responding and providing assistance to all emergency situations, including assuming Incident Commander as required.
  • Produce Quarterly EHS Data for Board Meetings and prepare previous year EHS data and goals for the executive team.
  • Keeping up-to-date on new safety methods and procedures to applicable codes and regulations or maintaining the required level of certification.
  • Have the ability to handle tough situations with ease, influence, and authority.
  • Be a skilled safety expert with the ability to demonstrate experience in the areas of accountability above.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

A four-year degree in a related field, such as Engineering, Environmental Science, or Health and Safety. Fifteen (15) years of related experience in which at least eight (8) years was in a management position with some portion in the meat industry is preferred. Well-developed management skills utilizing sound management principles in leading a team of employees. Proven ability to train and motivate personnel. Must have strong organizational skills.

KNOWLEDGE:

Must be knowledgeable on Tier II, Form R, EIQ, HAZWASTE Reporting, DMR, RMP, etc. reporting requirements.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS:

None required.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and/or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from Governmental Agencies, supervisors, and employees.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a wide variety of technical instructions in mathematical, diagram, written, and/or verbal form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to mine, analyze, prepare, and present safety data. Be able to demonstrate proficiency in software such as OHMs, WC databases, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to move about the facility. The employee is required to sit; use hands to finger; handle; or feel/hold objects; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; speak, hear, taste, and smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Be able to speak on the phone and make field visits to industrial areas when necessary to remain on your feet for extended periods of time.

The work environment is a combination of corporate and manufacturing. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to cold and/or humid conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, cold temperatures, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is moderate.
