Job Responsibilities
The Director of Study Abroad oversees the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of semester, summer, and faculty-led study abroad programs. The Director provides a high level of service and support for students participating in study abroad programs by helping to create relevant policies, procedures, and tools to enhance enrollment in these programs through simple, uniform, and sustainable practices. The Director is tasked with developing an effective strategic plan for the ongoing development of Truman’s study abroad portfolio and should have familiarity with the curricular and co-curricular structures and values of overseas programs. Responsibilities include advising students, working collaboratively with faculty, administration, and partner institutions, planning promotional events and materials, providing risk management for students, and assessing overseas programs. The Director reports to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. This is a full-time, exempt, benefits-eligible position that may require periodic work-related travel.

- Coordinate with faculty, staff, administration, and external constituencies in the development of study abroad programs and ongoing program assessment and evaluation. Work collaboratively with faculty, department chairs, school deans, and other academics leading the planning and coordination of faculty-led trips.
- Develop short- and long-range goals and policies for the Study Abroad office to promote strategic planning for study abroad at Truman. Work with departments and offices across campus to promote study abroad, facilitate procedures for study abroad, and address issues that arise on study abroad programs. Coordinate as needed with other on-campus units such as Admission and Enrollment Management, Registrar, Financial Aid, Academic Advising, and the Business Office.
- Prepare reports regarding site visits and program operations abroad as well as student evaluation for ongoing programs. Works with Academic Affairs and General Counsel to review appropriate articulation agreements and contracts. Provides leadership in the creation, revision, and assessment of program and course outcomes.
- Advise students who wish to participate in study abroad programs, including advice on program selection, applications, financial aid, credit transfer, scholarship applications, college policies, health and safety, cross-cultural adjustments, and other academic and non-academic issues.
- Develop annual budget requests for the Study Abroad office.
- Develop marketing plans for programs in consultation with relevant stakeholders and faculty.
- Establish and maintain professional networks with related local, state, national, and international organizations and agencies.
- Maintain all data and databases related to student participation in study abroad programs to inform policy and decision making. Monitor and enforce existing policies and assist in the development of new policies, processes, and standards to meet evolving needs.
Application Administration and Student Support
- Collaborate with other departments and partner institutions to administer all aspects of student application process including application, enrollment, financial aid, insurance enrollment and credit transfers and substitutions.
- Support students through pre-departure preparation and organize pre-departure orientations.
- Work with partner institutions and relevant departments at Truman to respond to any study abroad crises in accordance with established risk management procedures and to provide support services to students studying abroad.
- Manage all payments and invoices related to the study abroad program, including all charges and payments from students and partners, in coordination with the business office.
- Manage study abroad staff and student workers.
Program Development and Partnerships
- Organize calls for proposals and review processes for faculty-led programs and guide faculty to develop and execute high quality faculty-led programming.
- Facilitate and monitor all administrative processes for faculty-led study abroad programs, including approving, budgeting, bidding, marketing, and evaluating programs.
- Foster good working relationships and maintain contract documentation and contact information for all existing international partners and institutions.
- In consultation with international admissions, coordinate all exchange relationships and nominations.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Minimum three years of experience working in a university environment.
- Experience living, studying, or working abroad.
- Knowledge of study abroad programs, curriculum and program development, as well as assessment strategies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree from an accredited institution in International Studies or a related field.
- Minimum three years of experience working in a university environment charged with developing or managing study abroad or international programs.

Salary
The starting salary for this position ranges $45,000-60,000 annually commensurate with qualifications and experience.
