What are the responsibilities and job description for the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator position at Tuckaseigee Water and Sewer Authority?
An employee in this class performs a variety of operational, laboratory, and maintenance duties designed to safely treat and dispose of municipal wastewater in accordance with the NPDES permit. Work is performed on an assigned or rotating shift.
Work includes:
- Making regular tours of plants and checks bar screens, engines, generators, pumps, settling tanks, filters, clarifiers, chlorinators, and other equipment for proper functioning; starts and stops pumps.
- Monitoring plant processes through the computerized operational controls; and visual inspections.
- Performing standard laboratory chemical and biological tests; records readings and compares with historical data and computer recordings.
- Adjusting chemical feed rates, flow rates, retention times, etc.; monitors SCADA for plant readings, tank levels, and to make chemical feed adjustments; regulates aeration.
- Recording data from various meters, gauges and dials; logs daily, weekly, and monthly activities at designated intervals.
- Taking samples from various points in the treatment process and performs standard laboratory chemical and biological tests; calibrates various equipment.
- Performing general preventive and scheduled maintenance; makes routine inspections and makes minor mechanical repairs or adjustments; assists on major maintenance and repairs.
- Regulating and adjusting motors, pumps, blowers, valves and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions; operates sludge processing equipment.
- Performing routine building and grounds maintenance including cleaning, painting, mowing and trimming.
- Ordering parts and supplies using the requisition system.
- Maintaining detailed, accurate and timely records of work activities, readings, and laboratory results.
- Performing related duties as required or assigned.
Requirements
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Must possess the visual acuity to read gauges, dials, and observe moving parts of machines, to record and review written records, and to operate varied hand and power tools.
Desirable Education and Experience
- Graduation from high school supplemented by course work in chemistry or biology and some experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment, preferably in a water or wastewater treatment plant; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
- Must be able to obtain Grade I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate within 12 months of hire date and any other certifications deemed necessary by the Authority.
- Requires possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license, may be required to obtain a Class B CDL NC Commercial license with tank endorsement.
