Safety Sensitive: This is a safety-sensitive position.  Regardless of whether you are a medical marijuana licensee, you must receive a negative result on a 10-panel, pre-placement drug screening to include THC, prior to beginning work.

Your Job
The seasonal Education Supervisor oversees all summer camp and Zoo Teen activities at the Tulsa Zoo.  This position is responsible for youth ranging from  pre-K through 12th grade. . The seasonal Education Supervisor is also responsible for handling a selection of the department’s education ambassador animals.  This is a seasonal position that runs for 12 weeks during the summer months.
 
Your Essential Responsibilities

  • Promote safety among staff, guests, volunteers, and program participants.
  • Oversee the department craft room and catering kitchen; keep them neat and organized and notify manager when camp supplies/snack replenishments are needed. 
  • Provide direct support to Lead and Assistant camp counselors.
  • Promote positive classroom management during summer camps using social and emotional learning (SEL) principles. Assist with camper behavior management using a “teach not punish” mentality.
  • Monitor camper engagement and enjoyment, providing constructive feedback to camp counselors when needed.
  • Serve as backup coverage for camp in the instance of camp counselor absences.
  • Check on Zoo Teens while they complete their duties on grounds, ensuring appropriate hydration and rest breaks are taking place.
  • Oversee daily Camper and Zoo Teen check in and check out protocols.
  • Provide feedback to Zoo Teens using social and emotional learning (SEL) principles.
  • Manage and maintain paperwork and documentation associated with daily camp and Zoo Teen functions.
  • Assist Education Managers with Zoo Teen and camp counselor trainings.
  • Under the direction of permanent Education staff, handle and provide care to education ambassador animals in both public and non-public situations.
  • Effectively communicate and demonstrate interpersonal skills with all levels of employees in a clear and professional manner.
  • Demonstrate and adhere to TZMI’s workplace values.
  • Know and follow zoo policies and procedures, including emergency protocols.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and assigned training sessions.
  • Other duties may be assigned to you.
 
Supervisory Responsibilities                                                        
This position has no direct reports but does function in a mentorship role for camp counselors and Zoo Teens.
 
What We Expect
Required Qualifications, Education and/or Experience
  • Must be 18 years or older, possess a valid driver’s license, and be insurable on TZMI’s insurance carrier
  • Have or are working towards a bachelor’s degree in education, biology, zoology, environmental science, or a related field from college or university; one to three years experience working as a classroom teacher, an interpretive educator, or in an early childhood education setting; equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable; working knowledge of the natural world preferred
  • Familiarity with a variety of teaching methods, knowledge of age-appropriate
  • cognitive and physical abilities, and research skills required
  • Must be able to work in an active setting and complete assignments that require teamwork and/or self-starting; proficient in public speaking and creative thinking
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence; ability to communicate effectively before groups of customers, employees of TZMI, and the general public
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Microsoft Office – including Word, Excel, PowerPoint; Altru or other registration management software; Internet Browser(s)- Explorer, Chrome, Safari, etc.
