Under the general supervision and direction of the Senior Code Enforcement Officer Manager, the Code Enforcement Officer reviews and approves permit applications, construction plans, site plans and design documents to ensure that they meet Oneida Indian Nation building codes, fire safety, land use and zoning regulations and standards; conducts frequent inspections during construction projects and of occupied buildings to ensure compliance with Oneida Indian Nation codes, regulations and standards; monitors and enforces a variety of applicable ordinances, codes, regulations and standards relating to zoning, land use, nuisance, housing, building codes, fire safety, etc.; provides written reports of observations and makes recommendations to address concerns and eliminate potential violations; and serves as a resource and provides information on applicable Oneida Indian Nation regulations and standards to residents, businesses, and other Oneida Indian Nation entities or departments.

What you will do as a Code Enforcement Officer:
- Performs regular field inspections throughout all phases of construction, from planning to final certificate of occupancy.
- Conducts field investigations; inspects properties for violations; attempts to resolve any violations; issue and post warning notices, notices of violation, corrective notices, orders to comply and related documentation for code violations; and performs all required follow-up functions to gain compliance, including letters, inspections, calls, meetings, and discussions to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
- Reviews project plans for all new buildings, alterations, additions, and demolitions.
- Enforces policies and procedures; issues notices and orders to ensure compliance with the code.
- Maintains thorough understanding of established company and departmental policies and procedures.
- Provides written reports related to violations of Oneida Indian Nation laws, codes, ordinances, rules, or regulations or any concerns related to health, public safety, design or engineering.
- Maintains accurate documentation and case files on all permit applications, investigations, inspections, enforcement actions and other job related activities.
- Issue permits or documents including building permits, demolition permits, special use permits, site plan approvals, certificates of occupancy, certificates of compliance and stop work orders.
- Works with architects and engineers to assure proper compliance with Oneida Indian Nation ordinances, building codes, regulations and standards.
- Testifies in any court proceedings arising from inspections performed.
- Attends meetings; provides research and documentation for meetings; interprets and explains Oneida Indian Nation ordinances, codes, regulations and standards relating to zoning, land use, nuisance, housing, and building codes to residents, contractors, and businesses on Nation lands.
- Monitors construction/project sites; conducts work area assessments, surveys, and program evaluations to determine the presence of hazardous conditions and coordinates with managers to ensure compliance with environmental, health and safety standards.
- Performs other duties as required.
To be successful as a Code Enforcement Officer, you'll need:
- Associate’s Degree in related field of study or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of 2 - 5 years of code enforcement experience.
- Knowledge of most up-to-date International Building Code and NFPA. (Preferred)
- Ability to organize and manage complex projects.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be able to accommodate a flexible work schedule.
- Must possess a valid New York State Driver’s License.
- Ability to stand/walk for long periods of time and lift up to 50 lbs.
