Job Description
CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY
Provides sight, simultaneous and consecutive interpretation from English into Spanish; schedule interpreters for languages other than English; and provides administrative duties for the 5th Judicial District Court. Employees in this class provide and coordinate interpreter services and perform backup assistance within the court offices. The Certified Spanish Interpreter is supervised by the Administrative Supervisor. Work is usually performed in a courtroom or office where customers may easily be accommodated.
Duties / Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (illustrative only and may vary by assignment)
- Provides Spanish sight, simultaneous and consecutive interpretation for misdemeanor, district and juvenile court hearings;
- Takes Spanish phone calls and provides customer services; may take phone payments for court services;
- Maintains a master calendar of interpreted cases;
- Schedules and contact interpreters that speak languages other than Spanish;
- Screens individuals interested in interpreting to determine level of language skills;
- Provides training for interpreters in the Fifth District;
- Provides Spanish interpretation for misdemeanor and juvenile probation;
- Provides Court Assistance Office interpretation services for Spanish customers;
- Provides written translations as needed;
- Processes public defender applications;
- Achieves and maintains Idaho State Certification as a Court Interpreter;
- Provides administrative backup to co-workers;
- Responds to Commissioners', elected officials', County employees' and citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
- Performs time management and scheduling functions, meets deadlines, and sets project priorities;
- Regularly communicates and coordinates with appropriate co-workers to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
- Maintains strict confidentiality in all cases;
- Assists other department and County employees as needed or requested;
Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with County policies, procedures, and safety practices.

Knowledge of :
Operation of a personal computer and job-related software applications.
Skill and Ability to :
Perform all duties in accordance with County policies and procedures with regard for personal safety and that of other employees and the public.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING :
Two years of experience as a legal, medical or community interpreter; or
An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position may be considered.
Must successfully pass background investigation relevant to the position and remain in good standing for the duration of employment with the County.

Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing abilities required by this classification includes those which permit the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively in person, by telephone. While performing the duties of this classification, the employee works in an office setting where the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
