Description
The Academic Advisor is a full-time 12 month position that reports to the Associate Director of Academic Advising and Military/Veteran Services.
Essential Functions and Duties
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide accurate, relational, and professional academic advisement to prospective and current students in accordance with assigned academic pathway and/or grouping.
- Adjust between prescriptive advising and holistic advising as determined by academic advising leadership based on events, time of year, assigned student grouping, etc.
- Assist students in assessing academic skills and interpreting student placement testing.
- Schedule a personal connection with each student at the beginning of his or her program, encourage students to devise a plan for their educational goals so they can self-register prevent their success, but also about strategies that will motivate them to succeed.
- Engage, each semester, with all assigned students via appointments, text, Zoom, and phone calls; especially for those who may be identified as being the most at risk.
- Meet performance expectations as assigned by Academic Advising leadership.
- Participate in all new student orientations, preview days, and registration rallies.
- Create and manage appointment schedule.
- Ensure students are responded to in a timely manner regardless of communication medium; all responses to student questions or concerns are expected within one business day after receipt with some extension consideration provided during peak registration cycles.
- Work with admissions recruiters, career services, support services staff and other College personnel to promote and ensure student persistence and completion of goals educational goals.
- Maintain working knowledge of current workforce needs and job markets as required.
- Maintain an accurate knowledge of core curriculum and common transfer practices of the principal receiving universities to which Tyler Junior College students transfer.
- Participate in College recruiting activities to attract traditional and non-traditional students as required.
- Provide professional, timely and courteous assistance to internal and external stakeholders of TJC.
- Travel to other TJC locations as required for advising duties.
- Maintain confidentiality of student information and records; knowledge of FERPA and other applicable laws and regulations.
- Meet or exceed annual performance expectations as designated by academic advising leadership.

Qualifications
Required Education
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Experience in a customer service setting and having a natural desire to help others problem solve.
Preferred Experience
- Master’s Degree
- Experience advising in higher education or other related areas.
This position will involve some evening/weekend work hours; especially during key registration cycles.
