What are the responsibilities and job description for the Anniston Army Depot Environmental Program Internship position at U.S. Department of Defense (DOD)?
The Anniston Army Depot (ANAD) is the designated Center of Industrial and Technical Excellence (CITE) for ground combat vehicles, artillery, assault bridging systems, small caliber weapons and locomotives, rail equipment and non-tactical generators. Additionally, ANAD distributes and maintains stocks of conventional ammunition and is the Department of Defense’s only missile recycling center. For more information visit ANAD Home (army.mil).

Why should I apply and what will I be doing?
As an ORISE participant and under the guidance of a mentor, you will be exposed to a variety of environmental related roles that are designed to enhance your experience and knowledge. You will collect, compile, analyze and enter environmental management data for one or more program areas such as Environmental Restoration, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), various aspects in the Water Quality and Clean Air Act (CAA) Programs, and other areas. You will gain experience in the various laboratory testing, data compilation/calculations, permitting and reporting requirements for State and Federal Environmental entities to determine compliance. Alternative/Cross training in multiple fields is highly likely and you will assist with implementation of Environmental Restoration and Compliance Program. In addition, you will participate in the discussions with regulatory agencies regarding remediation and compliance; sample waste, soil and water; collect/evaluate data for incorporation into reports; prepare and review reports; and evaluate field implementation of compliance requirements for the RCRA, CAA, and water quality permits.

What is the anticipated start date?
The ANAD is prepared to begin this appointment by September 25, 2023. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
This appointment is a twelve-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

You will receive a stipend to be determined by ANAD. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
