The South Texas VA Health Care System is seeking a Podiatrist for the Victoria VA Clinic, Victoria, TX. The Podiatrist will provide podiatric care to patients within the scope of practice in collaboration with other health care professionals.

Duties

The Podiatrist is a health care professional that specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of foot and ankle conditions through medical and surgical means. Podiatrist are responsible for provide care to their assigned patients as well as covering other staff assigned patients when needed based on staffing needs and call coverage.

Duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Provide acute and chronic care, to include prevention through age and gender specific podiatric care.
  • Complete history and physical examination with an emphasis on diagnosis and foot/ankle pathology, and identification of related systemic conditions.
  • Complete medical surgical management of podiatric pathology.
  • Prescription of pharmaceuticals and therapeutic devises, (Orthotics, prosthetic devices, plaster casts, immobilization devices, etc.)
  • Appropriate consultation, referral and co-management of patients with complicating systemic conditions.
  • Health promotion and disease prevention and wound care and management of acute and chronic wounds.

The Podiatry Service may include, but is not limited to the following:

  • Outpatient/Inpatient podiatry medical and surgical services.
  • Nursing Home/Domiciliary medical and surgical services.
  • Ongoing prevention, in-service, and patient education programs,
  • Direction, teaching, and training of residents and students enrolled in training programs in both the inpatient and outpatient setting.
  • Maintenance and upkeep of clinic logs, patient medical charts, and other documents necessary in the operation of an inpatient/outpatient treatment clinic.
  • Participates in a call schedule of equal rotations amoung current Podiatry staff, and may participate in UT Podiatry practice plan and training programs.

Podiatrist whose responsibilities include teaching of podiatry students and residents will comply with GME requirements for teaching and supervision.

All Podiatric staff have a responsibility to understand the VA Mission; to establish effective and productive relationships with hospital administration, hospital staff, patients and the community as appropriate; to comply with training requirements an to contribute to a safe environment for patients and staff. All staff will participate in the Peer Review process.



Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday (7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.)

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:





  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Degree of doctor of podiatric medicine, or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in podiatric medicine and surgery. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Licensure or Registration. Applicants must possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice podiatry medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training. Podiatrists must have completed residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.
    • Approved residencies are:(1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or
    • (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training


Preferred Experience:

  • Board Certified in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine
  • Primary Care leadership experience and excellent communication skills.
  • Knowledge of regulations and preparation for accreditation surveys, i.e. Joint Commission, OIG, etc.

Physical Requirements:
Moderate lifting (15-44 pounds), light carrying (under 15 pounds), straight pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable (at 13" to 16" to jaeger 1 to 4), far vision correctable ( in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other), hearing (aid permitted), emotional and mental stability, and clear speech.

Education

Applicants must possess a doctor of podiatric medicine degree, or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in podiatric medicine and surgery. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed.

  • (1) Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine and surgery, approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education of the American Podiatry Medical Association in the year in which the degree was granted.
