POSITION OVERVIEW:

The United States District Court and the Probation and Pretrial Services Office for the Central District of California is recruiting for a Magistrate Judge Courtroom Deputy in the Eastern Division. This position reports to the Deputy-in-Charge in the Eastern Division. The Magistrate Judge Courtroom Deputy is assigned to support a United States Magistrate Judge serving as the judge’s primary liaison with the Clerk’s Office, attorneys, parties, federal agencies, law enforcement and providing necessary courtroom coverage and case management. This position is located in Riverside at the George E. Brown, Jr. Federal Building and United States Courthouse. This position offers limited telework opportunities. Travel to the Western Division (in Los Angeles) for training will be required. Occasional travel to divisional offices may also be necessary.

REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

· Manage and monitor the Magistrate Judge’s caseload and court calendars.

·Attend court proceedings, call court to order, administer oaths and swear in witnesses.

·Assist with the orderly flow of proceedings that include, but is not limited to, setting up the courtroom, conducting and troubleshooting court hearings by video and telephone, using platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, CourtSmart and other telephonic technology, assuring presence of all necessary parties, and assist with the selection of juries and managing exhibits.

·Compose substance of minute orders; prepare verdict forms, judgments and other court forms.

·Perform duties associated with criminal duty including preparing bonds and release orders, reviewing bonds and supporting documents to ensure bond conditions have been satisfied.

·Participate in the arraignment of defendants and provide other courtroom assistance, as necessary.

·Reviews the quality of electronic filings made by outside users, ensuring that entries are appropriately and accurately docketed, and take other appropriate corrective action as needed.

·Makes summary entries of documents and proceedings on the docket. Prepares and transmits to appropriate parties such items as: notices, judgments and orders.

·Acts as a liaison between the judge and other Clerk’s Office staff, Probation and Pretrial Services, the bar, the United States Marshal Service, the United States Attorney’s Office, the Federal Public Defender’s Office, other government agencies, and pro se litigants to ensure that cases proceed smoothly and efficiently.

·Performs data quality control on attorney docketed entries of all documents and proceedings; performs docket functions in the Case Management/Electronic Case Filing (CM/ECF) system; checks ECF ready folders; and assists in ensuring all automated entries are appropriately linked for proper case management.

· Assists in the accurate statistical reporting requirements of the Administrative Office.

· Provide relief coverage as needed.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:

·Candidates must be a high school graduate or equivalent. A college degree is strongly preferred. Paralegal experience is highly desirable.

·Courtroom deputy clerk experience is highly desirable.

A minimum of two years of progressively responsible office administrative experience, including the use of legal terminology, and the application of a body of rules, regulations, directions or laws to various situations.

·Possess excellent customer service and time management skills.

·Possess skill in paying attention to detail.

·Possess exceptional organizational skills.

·A Magistrate Judge Courtroom Deputy must be able to communicate thoughts with confidence, clarity, conciseness, and tact. The position requires excellent English written and verbal skills including grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

·Possess the ability to prioritize tasks and work assignments effectively and rapidly.

·Capability to learn a wide range of duties and tasks of several types of positions.

·The successful candidate must be a team player and exhibit the highest standards of excellence and integrity, and display always, and to all persons, a courteous, professional, and cooperative attitude.

· Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with a variety of individuals and agencies.

Due to the critical nature of case management and calendaring, a Magistrate Judge Courtroom Deputy must maintain a flexible work schedule and demonstrate a history of dependability. The position requires the ability to work 8 hours, 5 days a week, with the capacity to work additional hours, as necessary.

Skill in the use of computers and various computer programs such as Microsoft Office products is required.

PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands of the job involves lifting boxes, shifting exhibits and court records that require a person to perform moderate to semi heavy physical activity; requires trouble shooting courtroom equipment; ability to stoop, bend, pull and push carts or portable luggage carriers to deliver voluminous documents to the judge’s chambers weighing up to 40 pounds, with or without accommodation; ability to sit in court at a computer terminal during court hearings entering information into the databases, sitting from two to three hours at a time. Work is performed in an office setting or a courtroom on a daily basis overseeing the general clerical duties.
