STAFF ATTORNEY

CJC Individual Representation Clinic

Classification: Class Code TBD / TBD / Exempt / Full-Time / Benefited

Hiring Salary Range: $85,000 - $115,000 (commensurate with experience)

DEPARTMENT/POSITION

The UC Law SF Community Justice Clinics’ Individual Representation (IR) Clinic seeks applications for its Staff Attorney. This position is designed for law graduates with 0-5 years of experience, who are former students in the UC Law SF Individual Representation (IR) Clinic or have other equivalent substantive lawyering experience. The position is an excellent opportunity for a relatively new attorney to: (1) build and refine litigation skills in a range of practice areas; (2) learn from and be closely mentored by clinical faculty; and (3) support, and serve as a role model for, law students.

The initial term is contemplated to begin in May 2025 and continue for two years (contingent on successful completion of 6-month probationary period). If mutually desired, the contract may be renewed for an additional year.

THE ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Staff Attorney will perform a wide range of lawyering activities. They will represent clients in all of the IR Clinic’s substantive legal areas (Social Security disability, wage and hour, unemployment, and clean slate), as well as other areas in which IR clients may need legal assistance. In addition, the Clinic provides a supportive environment in which the Staff Attorney is encouraged to identify their own additional professional development goals that can be met within the position.

Typical duties include but are not necessarily limited to the following:

  • Responsible for interacting with referral agencies and interviewing potential clients;
  • Reviewing case files of potential clients;
  • Assisting in clinic cases during the semester and handling them after the semester;
  • Drafting and updating student training materials;
  • Assisting in workshops and trainings for students;
  • Conducting legal research.


REQUIREMENTS | EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

The following education and experiences are required:

  • California Bar admission;
  • Relevant legal experience in at least one IR practice area

It is preferable but not required if applicants have additional experience:

  • Completion of IR Clinic is preferred; other equivalent experience considered.
