Job Description

Under general supervision of the Manager of Youth and Community Programs, the Education Coordinator is responsible for the development, assessment, and implementation of year-round science education programming. Research and provide the highest-level of science content and accuracy for Education programs and activities appropriate for and in alignment with the Aquarium’s role as the public exploration center for Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), UC San Diego. Program audiences include, but are not limited to, multi-generational groups, families, toddlers, adults, preK-12 and college students, and teachers. Serve as Program Lead for programs serving PreK-12 students and teachers, including but not limited to onsite and offsite school programs, teacher professional development programs, annual Teacher Appreciation Night, and other student-centered events. Collaborate with Scripps scientists, teacher leaders and other community partners to develop phenomena-driven, experiential programs that align with NGSS-based formal curriculum and incorporate climate messaging. Program Lead responsibilities include full knowledge of day-to-day coordination of program logistics, objectives and lesson plans; training, mentoring and evaluation of program instructors and volunteers; recommending revisions and making approved changes; and assisting with strategic development of the program. Independently, and as part of a team, develop program descriptions and lesson plans, including the creation, procurement, and organization of materials appropriate to assessment of audience/community needs, investigation of current research and literature, and drafting plans and budgets for approval. As part of a dynamic team, assist with program marketing, staff development and strategic planning, and support of cross-unit programs. Supervise, recruit, interview, and hire part-time and full-time instructional staff. Implement programs using appropriate materials, teaching strategies and curriculum, recommending revisions as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA or BS in marine science, environmental science, or related natural sciences or in education with science specialization, or combination of related educational background and teaching in the subject matter, or equivalent experience.

  • Two or more years experience teaching in an informal science education institution, with a strong emphasis in science interpretation and integration.

  • Experience in and working knowledge of the use of the Next Generation Science Standards to develop student centered preK-12 science curriculum.

  • Experience in and working knowledge of interpreting and communicating complex scientific research for preK-12 and public audiences using research-based pedagogical strategies.

  • Experience in developing and implementing teacher professional development workshops using best practices in teaching pedagogy.

  • Thorough knowledge of museum educational techniques and approaches, and the ability to apply them across programmatic type(s) and environment(s).

  • Working knowledge of museum educational techniques and appropriate subject area content.

  • Working knowledge of the learning characteristics of museum audiences.

  • Working subject area knowledge presentation skills to diverse audiences, and in a variety of environments / settings.

  • Ability to maintain classroom attention.

  • Working knowledge of emerging educational technologies.

  • Strong verbal, interpersonal, presentation and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and use appropriate resources to accomplish assigned tasks / duties.

  • Ability to provide feedback and use mentoring techniques.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of best practices in supervising lower-level staff.

  • Thorough knowledge and skills in training development and / or learning strategies, and program and educator assessment.

  • Working knowledge and experience with best practices in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Schedule is Tuesday through Sunday and may be flexed to accommodate holidays and/or special events, as needed. Some programs involve outdoor, water or sea-going activities and may require lifting tanks and equipment plus handling live organisms.

  • Background checks, including National Registry of Sex Offender, FBI (live scan) and DMV are required. Must have a valid CA Driver’s license.

Duties may require direct contact with children (defined as individuals under the age of 18); completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) training will be required. Must meet CANRA compliance requirement per California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act ("CANRA," Penal Code sections 11164-11174.4).
