This position serves as Pilot-in-command or Second-in-Command of National Science Foundation (NSF)/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Gulfstream GV aircraft in support of worldwide research projects, which frequently necessitate airplane operations in turbulence, minimal instrument weather, at night, at low altitudes, over water, and over rough terrain. Operations may be conducted worldwide in various locations where diverse living accommodations, medical facilities, and aircraft facilities may be found. Where You Will Work: The Earth Observing Laboratory (EOL) is one of the seven laboratories of NCAR, the National Science Foundation’s Federally Funded Research and Development Center. The mission of EOL is to provide leadership in observing facilities, field project support, observational research and data services needed to advance the scientific understanding of the Earth system. EOL manages the majority of NSF’s Lower Atmosphere Observing Facilities (LAOF) and deploys them in support of observational field campaigns, ranging from single investigator projects to large complex campaigns that involve multiple investigators, agencies, and platforms, nationally and internationally. EOL deploys its systems for research by scientists from universities, NCAR, and government agencies. An integral part of EOL’s mission is to develop the next generation of LAOF and to provide management and archive of data from past supported campaigns. To ensure progress in the atmospheric sciences, EOL supports a wide range of research areas within the Earth system science, ranging from microscale to mesoscale to climate process studies, and deploys LAOF platforms and systems that reach from the surface of the Earth to the lower stratosphere and beyond. HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT AT UCAR Here is a brief outline of what one would expect to be responsible for in this role. Key Responsibilities Acts as pilot-in-command and second-in-command of the NSF/NCAR GV aircraft on various research deployments (US and worldwide) and on training/ proficiency flights as required. Assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of all airborne research profiles with the knowledge and expertise to ensure both safe and successful mission accomplishment. As pilot-in-command is directly responsible for and the final authority as to the operation of the aircraft. Remains qualified, current, and proficient in operating procedures for the assigned aircraft. Additionally, keeps abreast of all aviation-related rules and regulations that impact safe flight operations. WHO WE’D LOVE TO JOIN OUR TEAM Successful candidates will ensure their application materials speak to the following criteria: Education & Experience REQUIRED: A four-year baccalaureate degree. Graduate of a formal pilot training program. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities REQUIRED: Expert knowledge of FAA Regulations. Expert knowledge of all flight and emergency procedures relevant to the operation of the GV aircraft. Demonstrated skill in the management of aviation-related resources. Demonstrated skill in organizational and administrative processes. Demonstrated skill in problem analysis and decision-making. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Must hold a violation-free FAA Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate with Multi-Engine Land Rating. Gulfstream GV or G550 type rating. Current and qualified in the GV or G550 aircraft. Must hold a current FAA First Class Medical Certificate. Ten years as a professional pilot with worldwide experience. 2,000 Gulfstream GV or G550 pilot hours. 500 flight hours as pilot-in-command of GV or G550 aircraft. Ability to travel domestically or internationally for up to 10 weeks a year. Must be (a) a U.S. citizen; (b) lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States, or (c) a protected individual as defined by 8 USC1324b(a)(3).
