UCAR is excited to announce the job opening for an Aircraft Mechanic/Fabricator. This position is responsible for routine and non-routine inspection, service, and repair of turbine-powered turbofan and turboprop aircraft including airframe, engines, systems, and propellers, in accordance with the manufacturers and federal aviation requirements; participates in aircraft modifications, an inspection of scientific instrumentation and fabrication of supporting equipment to meet research requirements; and this position requires knowledge and skill related to turbine engine and airframe maintenance experience and extensive travel in support of field programs and aircraft maintenance functions. Where You Will Work: The Earth Observing Laboratory (EOL) is one of the seven laboratories of NCAR, the National Science Foundation’s Federally Funded Research and Development Center. The mission of EOL is to provide leadership in observing facilities, field project support, observational research, and data services needed to advance the scientific understanding of the Earth system. EOL manages the majority of NSF’s Lower Atmosphere Observing Facilities (LAOF) and deploys them in support of observational field campaigns, ranging from single investigator projects to large complex campaigns that involve multiple investigators, agencies, and platforms, nationally and internationally. EOL deploys its systems for research by scientists from universities, NCAR, and government agencies. An integral part of EOL’s mission is to develop the next generation of LAOF and to provide management and archive of data from past supported campaigns. Job Location: Broomfield, CO Job Type: In-Person *Some or all of the work in this position description must be performed on-site at UCAR campuses and/or remote field sites that are domestic and/or international. Position Type & Term: Full Time, One Year Term Hiring Range: $57,639 - $72,050 *Final salary and rates are based on education, experience, skills relevant to the role, and internal equity.* Other Requirements for this Position: Must possess a valid passport. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid US driver's license and Motor Vehicle Record that meets UCAR’s acceptability requirements for driving on UCAR business under UCAR policy 4-5. Must be willing to travel up to 16 weeks per year domestically and internationally. Must be able to pass an ATF background check. Key Responsibilities for this role: Scheduled and non-scheduled inspections including Turbine engines, fuselage, wings, empennage, propellers, landing gear, aircraft systems, and fuel tanks in accordance with established FAA requirements and manufacturers' maintenance manuals. Troubleshooting and repair/replacement of scheduled, non-scheduled/non-routine, pilot report issues related to Turbine engines, propellers, airframe equipment, landing gear, electrical/avionics components and wiring, aircraft systems, components, accessories, and equipment. Read and interpret aircraft maintenance manuals, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and computer-based maintenance tracking software. Perform preflight and post-flight inspections of aircraft. Assist Fabrication Specialists with the repair of sheet metal and composite structures per print; locate and/or source material and supplies for the fabrication tasks; Use tools such as power shear, sheet metal brake, rivet guns, drills, drill presses, and lathes. Assists instrumentation technicians and researchers in machining, fabrication, inspection, and installation tasks related to scientific instrumentation. Operates large power equipment such as forklifts and aircraft tractors. Assists in maintaining ground support equipment. Education & Experience REQUIRED: Must possess a current and violation-free FAA Airframe and Powerplant license and Five (5) years of experience as an Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) mechanic. and Three (3) years of experience working on turbine-powered aircraft. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities REQUIRED: Ability to troubleshoot and solve complex routine and non-routine failures in mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems aboard the aircraft using schematic diagrams, technical bulletins, and manufacturers and FAA publications. Demonstrated ability to utilize a broad understanding of mechanical systems to diagnose problems based on system behavior. Good oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of FAA maintenance regulations. Demonstrated skill in problem analysis and decision-making. Ability to use and interpret manufacturer technical aircraft maintenance publications. Knowledge and experience maintaining turbine-powered aircraft. Demonstrated skill in using a PC computer, including working with computer-based aircraft maintenance programs (ex. Flight Docs, Gulfstream CMP, CAMP). KSAs Desired but not required: Experience with Lockheed C-130 and/or Gulfstream GV aircraft. Sheet Metal Fabrication Experience. Composite Fabrication Experience. Be able to pass an FAA third-class medical.
