What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bruin Woods Youth Supervisor position at UCLA?

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Recreation and with a dotted line reporting to the Bruin Woods Program Director, the Bruin Woods Staff Supervisor is responsible for supporting the department in recruiting, vetting, hiring, training, and supervising staff who work with both youth and adults in Bruin Woods, Holiday Family, and Alumni programs. Responsibilities include supervising and mentoring of 50 seasonal student employees responsible for staffing alumni camp programming. In preparation for camp season: Duties include providing department programmers with regular updates on industry best practices and standards related to supervising seasonal and student staff in camp programs, developing hiring and training materials consistent with campus standards and industry best practices, developing and executing recruitment strategies and materials, organizing and facilitating interviews and hiring sessions, conduct required staff screening, coordinate, prepare and verify required documents, maintain files, make work plans/schedules with attention to managing both program need and staff wellness, as well as other duties as assigned. During Camp season: primary responsibilities will include continued recruitment, hiring and training, reviewing and submitting payroll, trouble-shooting pay and other employee issues, scheduling and managing camp staff, organizing and conducting regular staff meetings and training, updating daily/weekly camp and programmatic resources like family orientation materials, when to work, guidebook etc., ensure staff adheres to community living standards and policies consistent with University housing, facilitate conflict resolution as needed for staff living on the property and engaged in programming, facilitate care for injured or ill staff and complete all required paperwork as directed by the University, conduct regular check-ins with staff and provide other administrative assistance to the camp programs as needed.


Salary & Compensation



  • UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. Qualifications


  • Demonstrated working knowledge of payroll policies and procedures. Knowledge of timekeeping and reporting principles (Preferred)
  • Working knowledge of employee relations principles, recruitment, and employment processes. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of the University's Payroll Time Reporting system. (Preferred)
  • Ability to maintain sensitive information confidential. (Required)
  • Ability to prioritize and organize workflow to meet deadlines. (Required)
  • Ability to manage varying competing tasks appropriately. (Required)
  • Skill in math functions including the calculation of percentages. (Required)
  • Skill in speaking and reading English to be able to communicate effectively with many different constituencies. (Required)
  • Ability to write memos and correspondence using grammatically correct English. (Required)
  • Ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with administrators and staff. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of Youth Specific Policy and training requirements. (Preferred)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations


  • Bachelor's Degree In a related field and/or equivalent experience/training. (Required)
  • Red Cross CPR Certification Upon Hire (Required)
  • Standard First Aid Training Certification Upon Hire (Required)

Special Conditions for Employment


  • Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  • Live Scan Background Check: A Live Scan background check must be completed prior to the start of employment.
  • Age Requirement: Candidate(s) must be 18 years or older to be eligible to be hired.
  • Driving Record: The position is subject to the California DMV "Pull Notice System" and continued employment is contingent upon proof of a satisfactory driving record.
  • CANRA: The position is designated as a mandatory reporter under CANRA. The employee must sign the "Statement Acknowledging Requirement to Report Child Abuse".
  • Must be available to work varying schedules, including evenings, weekends and Holidays based on departmental needs (Required)
