What are the responsibilities and job description for the Clinical Lab Scientist Specialist position at UCSF Health?
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Specialist provides support to oversee the technical operations of the department. The incumbent will have assigned areas(s) of responsibility for technical, administrative, and quality activities.
The Specialist participates in teaching, training and education, and competency assessment of other CLS personnel, new hires and CLS students.
They are responsible to participate in the validation of test assays / laboratory instruments / Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) build activity and performing other activities as needed by the department to ensure a quality product.
The Specialist attends and participates in scheduled operations meeting. May be responsible to prepare reports for monthly Quality Reporting meetings. Actively participates in projects relating, but not limited to process improvements, test/workflow optimization and streamlining operations.
The specialist must be able to work independently under pressure, recognize problems, objectively identify causes, and determine appropriate solutions while maintaining a high level of organization, accuracy, and efficiency. Collaborates on projects as needed and may act as the lead CLS in the absence of a supervisor. In addition, the employee must adhere to all University and departmental policies.
WORK DAYS, HOURS, AND LOCATION
The expected shift is usually Monday-Friday with weekend rotation from 0600-1430; 0700-1530, 1200 - 2030 or as assigned. Holidays are assigned on rotational basis.
Workdays and hours are subject to change reflecting the laboratory’s needs. Flexibility and some overtime may be required dependent upon workload, required meeting attendance, etc. Overtime will be compensated by overtime pay or comp time.
While employees will have a home department, they may be required to work at either St. Mary’s or St. Francis based on pending work.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $66.80 - $83.22 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications
This position requires flexibility to orient and work at both UCSF Saints Hospital locations.
Demonstrated superior theoretical knowledge, technical judgment and skills and the ability to work with a minimum of supervision.
Assumes responsibilities for keeping abreast of technical developments through current literature review. As requested by a Chemistry Supervisor, evaluates new procedures and makes recommendations.
Bachelor of Science degree.
Two years of recent experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
Two years of recent experience in assigned discipline
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with validation of new assay/analyzer platform.
Demonstrated competence in technical writing and writing SOP.
Experience in teaching, including orientation, scheduling and training of employees.
Experience with CAP, TJC preparations and inspection protocols.
Three or more years of experience with the evaluation or development of new methods.
Demonstrated skills in data analysis, statistical evaluation, and data presentation.
Experience with CAP, TJC preparations and inspection protocols.
Prior experience with LIS maintenance.
Prior experience with instrument troubleshooting.
License/Certification
