Position Summary:
As an SCDOT Roadway Inspector, you will perform various roadway construction testing, observation and inspection on new and on-going projects to ensure SCDOT specifications and industry standards. This role involves working on SCDOT projects to verify material quality, record test results, and supporting construction teams by providing accurate and timely data.
Job Responsibilities:
- Travel safely to various job sites in a company provided vehicle; maintain company vehicle (schedule oil changes, inside/outside upkeep and complete monthly vehicle inspection reports)
- Perform routine field tests and/or inspections of soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt and other materials following SCDOT and industry standards
- Conduct inspections and observations on construction sites to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, and materials quality and standards
- Utilize nuclear density gauge to measure soil and asphalt compaction
- Perform concrete sampling and testing, including slump tests, air content, and making concrete cylinders for strength testing
- Document and report test detailed results accurately, maintaining records per SCDOT requirements to clients and supervisors on a daily basis
- Communicate effectively with contractors, engineers, and SCDOT personnel regarding test results, non-compliance issues, and corrective actions both verbally and electronically
- Ensure proper calibration and maintenance of testing equipment
- Maintain a 95% billable utilization rate
- Follow all safety procedures, policies and protocols
- Other tasks as assigned
Qualifications & Skills:
Required:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record
- 2-5 years of SCDOT field and/or inspections experience
- Preferred: AAS or BS in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology or related degree
- Strong knowledge of SCDOT material specifications and testing procedures
Required Professional Certifications:
- SCDOT Concrete Field Technician – Level I
- SCDOT Asphalt Roadway Technician
- SCDOT Earthwork Technician
- SCDOT Foundation Technician
- ACI Concrete Field Technician – Grade I
- Nuke Gauge
Preferred Professional Certifications:
- SC Erosion Control Inspector
- SCDOT Pavement Preservations
- Additional applicable industry certifications
Skills:
- Ability to calculate results from construction materials testing data
- Ability to accurately perform field and laboratory tests with minimal supervision
- Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Strong written and verbal communication and ability to use technology/computer
- Ability to read and interpret construction documents and technical specifications
- Ability to accurately complete field-testing paperwork and detailed figures
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations, to customers, clients, construction teams, and other employees of the organization
- Proficient in using required testing equipment
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
- Days and hours for this position are typically Monday-Friday with some weekends, holidays and overtime as needed
- Regularly exposed to outside weather conditions such as wet and/or humid environments, extreme cold and/or heat, dusty and noisy work environments
- Field work on outside construction sites involving long-term standing and potentially repetitive motions
- Ability to use your senses to see (including close, distant and peripheral vision, depth vision and ability to focus), smell, hear and touch (use your hands to reach, climb or balance, crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel and sit)
- Some weekend and overtime work and/or overnight work and travel may be required. You may be required to drive hundreds of miles per day.
- Ability to regularly lift and/or move/shake up to 40lbs. (soil and/or concrete tests and related apparatus); frequently lift and/or move up to 60lbs. (soil and sand samples, and nuclear density equipment); and occasionally move more than 100lbs. (such as a loaded wheelbarrow of concrete samples)
