Position Summary
Pharmacy Externs perform pharmacy technical functions under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacists. These individuals are currently enrolled in the UIC Retzky College of Pharmacy Pharm D program and perform services in Hospital Pharmacy.
Duties & Responsibilities
I. Preparation of medication orders for unit dose and intravenous admixture. – 42%
A. Select the correct medication or medical supply from stock based on a physician order.
B. Prepare intravenous admixtures and other sterile products using aseptic techniques.
C. Compound and reconstitute drug products on a timely basis, and document all the necessary information for their preparation.
D. Demonstrate safe and effective handling of hazardous medication in preparation techniques and disposal.
E. Label the medication in accordance with Departmental Standards and Policy and Procedures.
F. Prepare pediatric dilution when required.
G. Repackage the appropriate amount of medication.
H. Record all necessary information for the preparation and control of extemporaneous packaging.
I. Dispose of all needles, syringes, and pharmaceutical waste in the appropriate container.
J. Maintain the integrity of the laminar flow hood through routine cleaning, changing of the pre-filters, and adhering to all preparation procedures.
II. Distribution of medication. – 42%
A. Transport medications and admixtures to the assigned pharmacy or nursing unit and place in the correct storage area.
B. Fill and maintain Automated Medication Dispensing Cabinet System (AMC) as necessary.
C. Collect, fill, and deliver approved patient specific medications to assigned patient care areas and place in the correct storage area.
D. Acquire drugs from other satellites or locations when necessary.
E. Assist in all areas of the pharmacy department as needed.
III. Maintain a clean and organized pharmacy environment. – 6%
A. Routine cleaning of all areas of pharmacy including counters, shelves, computer monitors, computer keyboards, unit-dose medication drawers, carts, AMC, conference room, and break area.
B. Maintaining and replenishing supplies.
C. Assisting in the perpetual inventory of controlled substances as assigned.
D. Assisting in the maintenance of minimum acceptable inventory and a maximum turnover of drugs, monitoring and removing expired drugs from inventory.
E. Processing AMC rejects, and returning medications not administered to patients to inventory.
IV. Answer telephone promptly and courteously in accordance with UI CARE standards. All calls should be answered by the second ring. – 3%
V. Completion of administrative tasks such as computer data entry and special projects as assigned. – 5%
VI. Other related duties as assigned. – 2% Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
