What are the responsibilities and job description for the Visiting Research Specialist - College of Pharmacy - Pharmaceutical Sciences - Mankin Lab position at uic?
The Mankin & Vasquez-Laslop lab studies molecular mechanisms of protein synthesis. We are investigating how the ribosome, the most ancient and sophisticated molecular machine of the cell, makes proteins, how translation factors help it in this endeavor, and how antibiotics prevent it from doing its job. We are also engineering the ribosome to enable new functions and getting insights in its origin and evolution.
Duties & Responsibilities
Keep accurate records of the experiments suitable for writing manuscripts and grant proposals.
Present the results at scientific meetings.
Participate in weekly lab meetings, Journal Clubs and common seminars within the Department.
Carry out biochemical and microbiological experiments related to the mechanisms of antibiotic action and mechanisms of protein synthesis in bacteria.
Gene cloning and mutagenesis.
Protein isolation.
Analysis of RNA and DNA.
Experiments might involve working with small amounts of radioactive materials or moderately pathogenic bacteria.
Fulfill some lab maintenance duties, including ordering supplies and reagents, maintenance of the compliance with the safety regulations, and other duties as assigned. Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
