Under general supervision and direction of the Transportation Supervisor, the Lead Bus Driver Instructor trains and evaluates the driving performance of bus drivers, maintains training records, monitors the pull notice program, drives a school bus over designated routes, and does related work as required. Fills in for the Transportation Supervisor during the latter’s absence.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Note: These examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in positions allocated to this class. - Plans driver training programs; trains, supervises monitors and assists in the evaluation of the driving performance of bus drivers.
- Conducts in-service safety meetings and programs for staff and students.
- May fill in for the Transportation Supervisor in accordance with applicable out-ofclass provisions during the Supervisor’s absence.
- Schedules and provides classroom instruction and behind the wheel training for bus driver trainees.
- Coordinates with the California Highway Patrol for renewal tests, terminal inspections and maintaining clear and open communication with this oversight agency.
- Notifies bus drivers of license renewal requirements and conducts necessary instruction and training.
- Establishes, updates and maintains current driver records as required by the California Code of Regulations.
- Communicates and coordinates with others in the department, at school sites and other agencies such as the Department of Motor Vehicles, California Highway Patrol, and California Department of Education Transportation Program.
- Assigns drivers and equipment to field trips and assists Transportation Supervisor in planning and establishing routes and in assigning bus Drivers to routes.
- Monitors Department of Motor Vehicles pull notices.
- Keeps informed of changes in regulations related to transportation.
- Researches transportation-related matters and develops new training programs as necessary.
- Maintains bus security cameras.
- Checks mileage and access to proposed routes.
- Drives a school bus over designated routes.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS /REQUIREMENTS: KNOWLEDGE OF:

- Assist handicapped children as necessary to safely enter, be seated, and exit the school bus.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Comply with Education Code 40088. (a) An applicant for school bus driver instructor certificate shall successfully complete the appropriate instructor course given or approved by the department.
- An applicant for the course shall possess a valid driver’s license, certificates, and endorsement valid for driving the vehicles for which the driver instructor rating is sought.
- Five years of experience as a driver in the appropriate vehicle category, or two years of successful experience of the required driving experience plus three years of successful equivalent experience driving vehicles that require a class A or B driver’s license.
- A driving record with no chargeable accidents within the past three years preceding the date of application for the instructor certificate.
- Possess, and maintain current as a condition for ongoing employment, First Aid and CPR certificates and all other licenses, certificates and endorsements required of a School Bus Instructor in the State of California, including successful completion of California State Department of Education Bus Driver Instructor School.
