Ukiah Unified School District Job Description JOB TITLE: SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER LOCATION:School SiteDIVISION: Certificated REPORTS TO: Site Principal SUMMARY: Teaches basic social, academic, and home-living skills to students in schools using a variety of teaching techniques, materials, and equipment to initiate and reinforce learning; provides appropriate instructional activities to teach other life skills; develops or modifies curricula and provides lessons and other instructional materials according to ability levels, disabilities, and impairments of students; performs related work as required or assigned. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following, other duties may be assigned Participates in eligibility process, as assigned, and after student is determined eligible for special education program, participates in the intake process. Assesses student’s academic abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives, outcomes and disability or impairment. Collaborates with classroom teachers, other staff and parents to develop Individual Educational Programs (IEP) for each student assigned. Plans appropriate adaptative, instructional/learning strategies, and activities including determination of appropriate kind and level of materials. Participates in all assigned student’s IEP meetings. Implements an instructional or skill development program that provides appropriate experiences. Manages the behavior of learners in instructional setting to create an environment conducive to the learning process and assists and participates in the management of student behavior in other parts of the school. Collaborates in educational activities with other professional, as required to maximize learning opportunities of students. Assesses student achievement through use of formal and informal testing and observation, maintaining appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation. Utilizes a variety of instructional materials and available multimedia and technology to enhance learning. Requests assistance of and works with resource personnel as needed. Works in an inclusive setting, departmental or itinerant capacity as assigned. Participates in inservices, staff development activities, and staff meetings, including district special education meetings, as appropriate. Ensures continuous communication with parents, written and or oral, to keep them informed of student(s) progress. Communications with students on expectations and keeps them informed of their progress in meeting those expectations as appropriate. Manages allotted learning time to maximize student achievement. Assign work to and supervises, instructional aides, parents, and student volunteers as needed. Ensures classroom and or other instructional environment are attractive, healthy, safe, and conducive to learning, and those materials are accessible to students in good condition. Performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND OR EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) from a four year college or university, must hold a valid California Teaching Credential with specific Special Education authorization. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret periodicals, professional journals, curriculum guides and district policies. Ability to write reports, correspondence, and instructions. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from diverse groups of students, staff, parents, and administration. Ability to communicate and deal well with diverse personalities of students and staff. Ability to effectively present information to administration, parent groups, staff, and/or boards of trustees. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusion. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to manipulate, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
