Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Engineer II at UL Research Institutes, based in our Columbia, MD office.

The Research Engineer II conducts experiments, gathers data, analyzes data to develop preliminary findings, and prepares written reports. The Research Engineer II works closely with other researchers to ensure all processes are accurate and technically sound. Works within a team to perform the day-to-day laboratory / instrument operations and maintenance.

What you'll learn and achieve :

As the Research Engineer II, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you :

  • Identify fundamental knowledge needed to enhance UL's thought leadership and support the strategy of UL.
  • Document laboratory procedures, prepare detailed reports, and evaluate technical specifications and factors related to the process or design objectives.
  • Participate in maintenance and management of laboratory equipment and contribute to maintenance of safe and orderly laboratory environment.
  • Identify and recommend hardware and equipment needed for operations, and equipment for general lab and study specific use.
  • Stay ahead of changing technologies in the field by reading journals and scientific publications and attending academic conferences.
  • Gather initial data for projects and work with Research Engineers and Scientists to conduct research.
  • Assist with peer-reviewed publications.
  • Operate independently in the lab / field.
  • Can assist with data collection and initial analysis.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with thermal analysis techniques and standard reaction-to-fire tests.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computational fluid dynamics and / or finite element analysis models.
  • General knowledge of engineering disciplines.
  • Ability to maintain engineering based academic and applied knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to design and carry out experiments and data analysis.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Advanced instrument design, installation, and programming skills, i.e. python, Julia, C, C .
  • Ability to collaborate with peers and work directly with Research Engineers and other team members to complete a project from start to finish.
  • Ability to serve as lead author on reports and papers.
  • Professional education and experience requirements for the role include :

  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics plus 6 or more years of directly related work experience, or
  • Master's degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics plus 2 or more years of directly related work experience, or
  • PhD in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics plus 0 years of postdoctoral, or equivalent experience.
