Academic Advisor

UNC Charlotte
Charlotte, NC Full Time
POSTED ON 1/29/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 3/29/2025

The Department of Engineering Technology and Construction Management nurtures a professional, collaborative and supportive learning community in which all stakeholders (students, faculty, industry sponsors and partners) can succeed.

Primary Purpose of Position
The ETCM Advising Center serves undergraduate students within the department’s academic programs, students in transition, and to prospective high school and transfer students in the Engineering Technology and Construction Management Department. The primary purpose of the Center is providing academic advising using a developmental model. Using a developmental model approach, Academic Advisors in the Center work with students so that students develop the knowledge and skills and personal accountability needed to explore their academic and co-curricular options, evaluate and track their own progress toward graduation, access support and enrichment services, and understand and follow university policies and timelines. Advising services encompass a range of interactions with students from individual and small group meetings to email and social media, among others. The Center also provides orientation to new students, support to first-generation college students and transfer students, intervention programs for at-risk students, and graduate students. ETCM advisors have the ability to work autonomously in a complex, team-oriented academic office with significant student traffic, have a commitment to student success and the ability to listen and analyze academic needs, will collaborate with faculty in the Engineering Technology and Construction Management Department to provide additional information / services/ programming to majors, will participate in new student orientations (SOAR), Majors Day, EXPLORE UNC Charlotte, and other events as necessary, generate reports on academic progression, graduation-oriented advising, process degree clearance for undergraduate students, and develop a thorough working knowledge of campus support services and referral processes.

Summary of Position Responsibilities
The entry-level academic advisor is primarily an implementer of a developmental advising model that involves a tailored series of interactions and communications using advising tools and systems designed to address the specific needs of the students served by the ETCM Advising Center. This tailored developmental approach acknowledges that individual student profiles and those of student cohorts may differ not only at the onset of the student’s academic experience but throughout their academic career. The advisor must have the experience, education, and background necessary to serve the educational function of an advisor. However, he or she is doing so in a context developed by the Center and in collaboration with more experienced colleagues, the Director, and the Chair.
