Primary Purpose of Position
The HRL Locksmith is responsible for assisting in the daily operations of the Housing and Residence Life Lockshop services. The HRL Locksmith performs journey level work in lock replacement, pinning of locks, cutting of keys, maintaining of door hardware, maintaining of electronic door hardware, inspection of fire exit alarm devices, door replacement, closure replacement, and repair of doors across all of the residential buildings on campus. The HRL Locksmith assists in the maintaining of the Lockshop key database and manual records systems. The HRL Locksmith must have excellent organizational and computer skills to assist in maintaining the keys for the department and the Lockshop database. The HRL Locksmith must have good communication skills to interact with staff, students, and vendors. This position is a 2nd shift position and will be working alone most of the time and must be able to work independently.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position’s role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
University Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or equivalent and four years experience. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position’s role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Essential Job Duties
Position requires the application of skills in planning, problem-solving, attention to detail, teamwork, communication, mechanical and technical knowledge of locksmith trade, and the adherence to safety policies and regulations. Applies knowledge and skill to maintenance and construction tasks.
Tasks range from routine and unskilled to highly skilled in the locksmith trade and includes:
- Installs, maintains, repairs and adjusts all types of locks and their components for campus residence halls, rooms, furniture and vehicles.
- Cut and issue keys.
- Program key cards.
- Program and maintains electronic keys and cylinders.
- Implement, troubleshoot, repair and program computerized access control systems.
- Upgrade and maintain security systems.
- Maintain and repair automatic door openers and door closing units.
- Inspect completed work for conformance with specification requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations.
- Inspect related work performance by contractors.
- Estimates cost, time and materials for locksmith projects.
- Participates in the maintenance and operations of a lock shop.
Other Work Responsibilities
- This position serves in an on-call rotation and is designated as ‘mandatory’ and, when contacted to report to work.
- The employee is expected to reach the campus as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as directed by adverse weather conditions.
Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
- Three to five years of locksmith, door and closure repair, and hardware experience in a commercial environment.
- Good communication skills for working with a diverse population of students, staff and guests of the university.
- Ability to work second shift and conduct work on their own.
Necessary Licenses or Certifications
North Carolina Locksmith License required.
