ER Secretary - CNA

Position Overview:

The ED Secretary - CNA is responsible for providing support in the Emergency Department while ensuring patient safety and operational efficiency. The position involves demonstrating UNC Health Appalachian's Mission, Vision, and Values through daily actions, including professionalism, effective communication, and collaboration. This role is focused on delivering quality care and service excellence within a team-oriented environment. Compensation is commensurate upon education, experience, certification, and internal equity. Hiring compensation range starts from $16.00 /hour.

• Compensation is commensurate upon education & experience - range is 16.00/hour or more (depending on education & experience). Benefits begin the first of the month following 60 days of employment from the new hire orientation date. This position is a non-exempt position.

Key Responsibilities:

• Respond promptly to changes in patient conditions and assist in emergency situations.
• Perform certified nursing assistant duties under supervision, supporting patients and staff.
• Ensure patient safety and comfort through accurate documentation and effective communication.
• Maintain professional relationships with coworkers, physicians, and other healthcare team members.
• Support a healthy, collaborative work environment through teamwork and positive interactions.

Position Requirements:

Minimum Education:

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required at the time of hire.

Experience:

• Previous experience as a CNA is preferred but not required.

Required Registration/License/Certification:

• Certified as a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) in the state of North Carolina.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association is required at the time of hire.
• Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training and certification required to be completed within one (1) year of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of scope of a CNA and experience in the field.
• Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with the public, patients, family, staff, and physicians.
• Ability to resolve conflict and maintain integrity in occasional high-stress situations.
• Knowledge of the continuum of care.
• Ability to demonstrate exceptional customer service.

Physical Demands:

• Lifts, positions, pushes, pulls, and/or transfers up to and greater than 50 pounds.
• Prolonged, extensive, or considerable sitting/standing/walking.
• Bending, squatting, twisting, and turning.
• Near acuity: ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less.

Working Conditions:

• Regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases.
• Frequently exposed to hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment and unpleasant elements.
• Requires flexibility to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
