Position Overview
The Phlebotomist collects venous and capillary blood specimens from neonates, pediatric, and adult patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The Phlebotomist ensures patient safety, accuracy in specimen collection, and effective communication with patients, families, and healthcare teams while adhering to ARHS policies and regulatory guidelines.
Compensation is commensurate upon education, experience, certification, and internal equity. Hiring compensation range starts from $15.50 per hour.

Key Responsibilities
- Collect venous and capillary blood specimens following proper procedures and safety protocols.
- Accurately identify patients and label specimens to ensure proper processing.
- Communicate effectively with patients to ensure comfort and understanding of procedures.
- Maintain documentation and enter data into laboratory computer systems.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals to support patient care.
- Follow infection control protocols and ensure compliance with all laboratory safety standards.
Position Requirements
Minimum Education
- High school graduate with formal or on-the-job training sufficient to qualify for phlebotomy certification.
Experience
- Experience during training with a minimum of 100 successful venipunctures and 50 capillary collections required.
- Previous experience as a phlebotomist preferred.
Required Registration/License/Certification
- Completion of an accredited phlebotomy program or documented on-the-job training with 100 successful venipunctures and 50 capillary collections.
- Phlebotomy certification from an accredited agency preferred but not required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association required at the time of hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for patient and team interactions.
- Competency in specimen collection, labeling, and processing within practice policies.
- Proficiency in laboratory computer programs and ability to type at least 25 WPM.
- Exceptional customer service skills to support a positive patient experience.
Physical Demands
- Continuous standing and walking for ≥ 8 hours per shift.
- Speaking, reading, and writing for ≥ 8 hours per day.
- Frequent patient interactions requiring fine motor skills and dexterity.
- Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling ≥ 50 lbs.
- Frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting, turning, and reaching.
- Frequent hand, finger, and wrist repetition with moderate dexterity.
Working Conditions
- Regular exposure to bloodborne diseases.
- Frequent exposure to chemicals, reagents, and hazardous materials used in laboratory specimen processing.
- Exposure to electrical, mechanical, and power equipment hazards.
- Subject to irregular hours, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Extended periods of standing and walking required.
