What are the responsibilities and job description for the Animal Control Officer position at Unicoi County Animal Shelter?
Essential Functions:
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
In this position, you will deal with aggressive and potentially dangerous animals. You will be expected to deal with feral cats and dogs that have attacked other dogs or people.
Further, this position: apprehends, processes and impounds lost, injured or abandoned animals; restrains stray animals; sets traps for strays; lifts and carries animals. Utilizes and maintains various equipment and tools associated with animal control activities; conducts daily inspections to check equipment.
Assists in shelter duties and in caring for animals such as cleaning and maintaining kennels. This position will be expected to clean dog kennels two (2) times a week at the minimum and help the normal dog cleaner in performing those duties. This will also apply for cats.
The position will also helps restrain animals for vet tech staff during examinations of animals brought into the shelter; performs euthanasia; disposes of dead animals.
Releases animals from shelter in accordance with established procedures; handles pet adoptions with office staff.
Enforces the provisions of federal, state, and local codes and ordinances applicable to animal activities; completes pending/follow up calls and takes specific call assignments; patrols the county for stray, injured, and/or sick animals; and reviews previous cases with other animal control officer.
Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws and regulations and attends in-service training.
Investigates complaints and reports of bites, cruelty, abuse, stray/nuisance, and neglect or abandonment of animals by citizens and other providers of animal care; obtains evidence and information to appear in court to testify as witness; writes summons for court and prepares statements; and conducts interviews with complainant and possible suspect.
Perform on-call duty emergency duty and alternate every other week with the other officer. No exceptions.
Completes and/or processes a variety of forms, logs, reports, and other required documents.
Drive animals to and from veterinary appointments.
Participates in emergency response operations as required in a declared emergency.
Responsible for keeping a log of calls from dispatch that must match animal control log sheets and mileage with the animal control truck.
Preferred Qualifications:
One (1) year of prior experience serving as an animal control officer and in the handling of animals, enforcing codes, providing customer service, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Required Qualifications: Must have a valid TN drivers license. Must be able to pass a drug screening including random drug screenings. Must obtain state certification in euthanasia within six (6) months of employment. Must work weekends, holidays, and on-call if requested. Full-time at 32 to 40 hours a week. Tuesday through Saturday - no exceptions. Must undergo a background check and provide a detailed work history as well as professional and personal references.
Pay: $11.25 per hour
