Exceptional Children’s Paraprofessional
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Reports to: Exceptional Children’s Director
Purpose: Under general supervision, provides assistance to students identified as disabled in accordance with state and federal regulations.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Monitors special needs students in the regular education setting and assists students by helping them stay on task; organizing materials, recording homework assignments; providing extra review or instruction as needed
Monitors student behavior in the regular education setting; maintains discipline in the classroom; deescalates inappropriate behaviors; teaches students appropriate behavioral strategies; restrains students when necessary; records and reports restrains.
Provides work samples and gathers data for EC Teachers to record progress on IEP goals
Provides and assists teachers in providing testing accommodations according to IEP and 504 specifications. Schedules testing accommodation groups and schedules volunteers to help with testing accommodations when needed.
Assists disabled students with their personal and self-help needs, such as eating, toileting, and other essential tasks that the students are not able to perform by themselves.
Completes clerical duties as needed
Treats all students in a fair and equitable manner, interacts effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and community.

Desired Training and Hands-On experience
Associates (or higher) degree
A minimum of 48 semester hours of coursework at an institute of higher education (IHE)
Community college placement tests:
- Accuplacer, ASSET, COMPASS (IHE cut scores)
- WorkKeys assessment tests – Applied Mathematics (cut score 4)
- Reading for Information (cut score 4)
- Business Writing or Listening & Writing (cut scores 3, 3/3)
4. North Carolina Department of Labor Teacher Assistant Apprenticeship Program Certification
5. North Carolina Teacher Assistant Association PDP:
- Instructional Associate – Level I Certificate
- Instructional Associate – Level II Certificate
- Instructional Associate – Level III Certificate
6. Paraprofessional Praxis Test and/or Paraprofessional Certification (awarded by another state)
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards required to perform essential job functions:
Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift at least 50 lb. and be able to provide support in the transfer and lifting of students with disabilities.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. This includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to parents, students, and staff.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form.
Verbal Aptitude: You must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in Standard English.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate eyes and hands to use the keyboard.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk, write and hear.
Assessment: Performance of this job will be assessed annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on assessment of administrative personnel.
Terms of Employment: Salary and work year as established by the Board.
