2025-26 K-6 School Guidance Counselor
Union Day School is seeking a compassionate, student-focused K-6 School Guidance Counselor to support the academic, social-emotional, and developmental needs of our elementary students. This position will also oversee 504 Plan coordination and serve as the McKinney-Vento liaison, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations while advocating for students experiencing homelessness.
Key Responsibilities:
School Counseling & Student Support:
- Provide individual and group counseling to support students' emotional, academic, and behavioral development.
- Implement a comprehensive school counseling program based on the NC Comprehensive School Counseling Standard
- Conduct classroom guidance lessons on social-emotional learning, conflict resolution, and career awareness.
- Assist in crisis intervention and develop strategies to support students facing personal challenges.
- Collaborate with teachers, staff, and families to develop strategies that foster student success.
- Participates in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills.
- Uses available technology resources to enhance the school counseling program.
- Adheres to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the school counseling profession.
504 Plan Coordination:
- Manage and oversee the Section 504 process, ensuring compliance with federal and state guidelines.
- Facilitate 504 eligibility meetings, annual reviews, and reevaluations.
- Develop and maintain accurate documentation for all 504 plans.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for teachers, parents, and staff regarding student accommodations.
McKinney-Vento Liaison:
- Identify and support students experiencing homelessness under the McKinney-Vento Act.
- Ensure compliance with federal and state laws regarding the education of homeless youth.
- Provide outreach and resources to families to remove barriers to education (transportation, school supplies, etc.).
- Collaborate with local agencies and community partners to provide additional support for students and families.
Accountability
- Conducts a yearly program audit to review the extent of program implementation and effectiveness.
- Collects and analyzes data to guide program direction and emphasis.
- Measures results of the comprehensive school counseling program activities and shares results as appropriate with relevant stakeholders.
- Monitors student academic performance, behavior, and attendance and facilitates appropriate interventions.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Master’s Degree in school counseling from an accredited college or university, or
- School counseling licensure: NC licensure in school counseling (Department of Public Instruction license)
Preferred:
- At least (1) year experience as a school counselor
- Charter school experience
Salary : $42,000 - $69,410
