What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Director, Eisner Camp position at Union for Reform Judaism?

The Assistant Director works as part of the full-time staff team to implement the missions of the camp and the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ). The Assistant Director plays a key role in the recruitment and retention of campers and families; in the recruitment, hiring, and training of staff members; in the design and execution of the camp program; and in the many operational areas essential to achieving these goals. This position reports to the Director of URJ Eisner Camp.

The Assistant Director will travel as a representative Eisner Camp, including trips for camper and staff recruitment; professional conferences; and to URJ North American events as well as Eisner Crane Lake Board of Advisor meetings. During the summer, the individual lives in residence at Eisner Camp and works in a senior leadership capacity.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE:

YEAR-ROUND FUNCTIONS
Camper Recruitment & Retention

  • In partnership with Director and staff team, develop and implement a strategic marketing and recruitment plan to ensure program enrollment goals are met.
  • Maintain communication with prospects and current families alike.
  • Develop familiarity with Salesforce, CampMinder, and other software applications.

Staff Recruitment

  • Implement human resource management practices to recruit and retain seasonal staff, including recruitment and training of seasonal staff.
  • Recruit staff based on camper enrollment and program management requirements as well as Jewish educational goals.
  • Maintain communication with prospects, applicants hired staff, and former staff.

Communications & Administration

  • Manage necessary communications through email and social media.
  • Manage administrative processes associated with camper registration, staff hiring, and all related paperwork.

Summer Preparations

  • In consultation with the Director, prepare programs, activities, and trips for the upcoming summer, and support the physical preparation of the camp, including ordering and inventorying supplies, purchasing equipment, etc.
  • Remain current with information on the developmental needs of youth.

Organizational & Community Engagement

  • Support and promote all URJ youth programs and projects.
  • Engage in life-long Jewish learning in order to serve as a Jewish educational resource in camp.
  • Support the work of the Eisner Crane Lake Board of Advisors.
  • Maintain communication and seek input from the clergy and staff in the camp’s catchment area to maintain an ongoing relationship with the congregations.
  • Work with camp alumni on a project basis.

SUMMER FUNCTIONS:
Camp Community

  • Work with the rest of the full-time team to develop a community that is nurturing and supports the growth of the individual in order to model the ideals of a Reform Judaism and to serve as a living laboratory for our congregations. The ideal outcome is a camp community that lasts beyond the individual’s time at camp.

Summer Staff & Program

  • Train, supervise and evaluate seasonal staff.
  • Supervise select Leadership Team staff.
  • Directly supervise select areas of program and operations.

Physical Requirements:

  • From September-May, must be able and available to travel, when needed.
  • Must be present at camp during the summer.
  • Participation in professional development programs, including annual conferences and gatherings, is expected.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2 Years of previous experience in residential camping management and leadership experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Prior success in a professional setting is required, and experience within a leadership role is preferred.
  • Significant experience in a camp or youth work environment and knowledge of the Jewish community are strongly preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and ability to master other databases and internet applications.
  • Top-notch oral and written communication skills
  • Proven guest service skills
  • Advanced organizational and planning skills.
  • Proven ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and multitask with minimal supervision.
