Salary Range : $60,000 - $63,000 plus competitive benefits package

The Role

The Union for Reform Judaism’s (URJ) Myron S. Goldman Union Camp Institute (GUCI) seeks a Business & Operations Manager to oversee and enhance the financial and administrative operations of the camp. This key role ensures that GUCI runs efficiently while aligning with the URJ's financial policies and business practices. The Business & Operations Manager will work closely with the Camp Director to implement both short- and long-term business plans that support GUCI's growth and deepen its program impact. This position is essential in ensuring smooth operations for both the camp’s summer and year-round youth programs.

What You Will Do

The Business & Operations Manager reports to the Camp Director and is responsible for the following :

Business Management

Oversee and improve business practices, operations, and impact at camp. Ensure alignment with URJ financial policies and practices. Work with the Camp Director in implementing short- and long-term business plans.

Responsible for day-to-day management of accounting, financial management, and business operations for all camp and year-round youth programs. This includes, but is not limited to accounts payable, accounts receivable, bookkeeping, budget tracking and reporting, reconciliation, banking (deposits and transfers), petty cash systems and processes, purchase orders, grant support, and participant registration and payment. Support development operations, as needed

Primary contact with camp families and synagogues relating to account balances, payments, fees due, and general registration questions.

Oversee insurance-related processes including but not limited to workers comp, camper insurance, vehicle, and general insurance needs.

Oversee financial and administrative processes related to seasonal staff payroll. Manage year-round staff’s time and attendance requirements according to URJ payroll policies.

Partner with the camp director to create and manage the annual budgeting review process, quarterly projections, and year-round tracking of revenues against expenditures. Track in Adaptive (budgeting software), measure against the big picture and flag threats and opportunities.

Produce accurate and timely financial reports. Reports may include but are not limited to budget projections, development and grants, financial insights required by URJ's central finance department, and more.

Continuously evaluate and assess vendor relationships and ensure the camp is getting the best possible pricing (in partnership with the Director and other Professional Staff, as needed and appropriate).

Oversee the camp’s offseason business portfolio, including contracting, hiring staff, ensuring the camp property is prepared for guests, and collecting payments. Provide exceptional customer service to offseason rental customers and prospects.

Camp Operations

Assist with camper registration process including but not limited to coordinating camper travel and collection and review of all camp forms. Partner with the Director team to address medical and camp care issues related to camper forms.

Oversee key elements of camp operations, such as the Kitchen, Infirmary, and office during the summer season. Actively contribute as a key member of the summer director team, engaging in all aspects of summer programming. This includes assisting with program development, staff supervision, and fulfilling senior team responsibilities, such as nighttime on-call duty, and other duties as assigned.

Support camper and staff recruitment and retention.

Who You Are & Keys to Success (the must-haves) :

To be successful in this job, you excel in the following areas :

Financial Management & Reporting : Experience in financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis. Proficiency in managing accounts payable / receivable, bookkeeping, and reconciliation processes. Experience with financial management software, particularly Adaptive or similar tools, to track budgets, expenditures, and financial projections.

Operations : Ability to streamline processes, assess workflows, and make improvements to ensure camp operations run efficiently and cost-effectively. Strong project management abilities to oversee the planning, execution, and evaluation of both short-term and long-term business and operational plans. Understanding of camp operations, particularly in the areas of camper registration, travel coordination, and medical form review.

Management : Experience in supervising and supporting diverse teams, including kitchen staff, infirmary personnel, and office staff, ensuring compliance with health and safety protocols and operational efficiency. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills for working with families, synagogues, and offseason rental customers to address inquiries and resolve issues.

Self-Management & Accountability : Strong ability to assess priorities and manage time effectively to meet goals while ensuring personal well-being. Competence in establishing SMARTIE goals aligned with organizational objectives and collaborating with management for clarity. Skill in articulating needs and challenges clearly to foster a transparent and collaborative environment. Commitment to maintaining respectful communication and timely responses to colleagues and stakeholders. Initiative in regularly accessing organizational updates and essential information to stay informed and effective.

Collaborative Teamwork : Ability to work with diverse teams to achieve shared goals, ensuring clarity in roles and responsibilities. Proficient in scoping projects and using frameworks like MOCHA to define purpose, outcomes, and accountability. Skill in managing time and resources to meet commitments on schedule and within budget while addressing challenges respectfully. Willingness to learn about the broader organizational context and strengthen collaborative initiatives. Capacity to connect people and ideas to identify and implement opportunities for enhancement across teams. Skill in valuing diverse perspectives to develop comprehensive solutions and foster a culture of inclusion.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Weekend travel during the fall and early winter months for staff and camper recruitment.

Occasional travel to and from Zionsville, Indiana (or other locations) for GUCI and URJ staff meetings, professional development and / or staff programs.

Live in residence at camp during summer season.
