The Role
The Union for Reform Judaism’s (URJ) Camp Harlam is seeking a dedicated and hands-on Maintenance Associate to ensure the upkeep of camp facilities and grounds. This role supports the URJ’s mission to create communities of belonging, build confidence and character in young people, and inspire lifelong Jewish engagement. As a member of the camp's Facilities team, the Maintenance Associate will perform a range of maintenance and repair tasks to ensure a safe, clean, and functional environment for staff, campers, and retreat groups.
What You Will Do
The Maintenance Associate reports to Facilities Manager and is responsible for the following:
Maintenance & Repairs: Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on camp buildings, grounds, equipment, and systems (plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC, etc.) to ensure safety and functionality.
Groundskeeping: Maintain campgrounds, including mowing, weeding, debris removal, and snow shoveling. Operate necessary equipment safely.
Housekeeping: Perform janitorial duties, including cleaning floors, windows, and repairing basic fixtures and equipment. Manage waste and recycling disposal.
Event Support: Assist with preparing camp for group use, including setting up rooms for meetings or retreats and securing camp after group departures.
Emergency Response: Provide immediate maintenance support during emergencies, working closely with the Facilities Manager.
General Support: Maintain a safe and clean workshop and follow safety protocols. Support camp leadership and work collaboratively with vendors, staff, and the community. Stay up-to-date on equity, diversity, and inclusion (REDI) practices in all aspects of your role.

Maintenance Skills: Hands-on expertise in mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and general facility maintenance, including troubleshooting, repair, and upkeep of various systems. In-depth understanding of safety standards, building codes, and regulatory requirements, with the ability to ensure compliance across all camp operations.
Adaptability: Ability to manage competing demands and adjust priorities as needed. Open to receiving and integrating feedback to improve performance. Skilled in modifying approaches to suit different situations effectively.
Dependability: Responsiveness to service requests and proactive in providing assistance. Follows instructions and adheres to management directives consistently. Takes ownership of responsibilities and delivers high-quality work. Ability to respond to facility-related emergencies promptly, efficiently, and effectively, minimizing disruption and maintaining safety.
Safety & Security: Adheres to safety and security protocols diligently. Capable of assessing situations and taking appropriate actions beyond standard guidelines. Utilizes equipment and materials safely and effectively. Vigilantly reports unsafe conditions to ensure a secure working environment.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Physical Demands: Ability to perform physical tasks related to facility upkeep, including repairs, maintenance, and inspections. Ability to lift 75 lbs. or more. Stamina and willingness to work long hours, in inclement weather and for stretches of days.
Ability to work irregular hours including weekends.
A high school diploma or equivalent.
