Patient Access - Registrar
Position Summary
Under direct supervision of the Patient Access Director, the Registrar ensures timely and accurate registration of all patients, creates a positive impression and provides excellent customer service to all patients, family members, visitors, and employees. The Registrar performs all duties in a manner that promotes the team concept and reflects the goals and values of Union General Health System. Work requires significant attention to detail and the application of analytical/critical thinking skills. Incumbent must maintain professional communication with patients, family members, visitors and co-workers. This is a highly visible and responsible position within Union General Health System.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities

- Conduct patient interview to obtain and/or verify patient demographics, guarantor information, insurance benefit information and financial responsibility for new or established patients in accordance with Union General Hospital Patient Access Policy.
- Create a patient encounter in the ADT registration system in accordance with established policy and procedures for inpatient, ambulatory surgery, non-patient laboratory, radiology and/or other diagnostic ancillary tests/services.
- Verify and update patient’s insurance coverage, limitations and personal financial responsibilities.
- Ensure all monies due at time of service as notated in the patient account is collected in accordance with Union General Hospital policy.
- Ensure patients are apprised of advanced beneficiary notice, as appropriate and in accordance with Medicare Medical Review Policies.
- Verify that the all required data set for all orders is obtained prior to scheduling/registration.
- Analyze insurance information/reason for admission or encounter to determine pre-certification and/or pre-authorization requirements.
- Alert appropriate departments when pre-certs / authorizations are not received prior to services being rendered.
- Ensure all required documents are scanned: valid forms of ID, Insurance cards, and Physician Orders.
- Inform patients of Consent for Treatment, Patient Bill of Rights, Joint Privacy Practice, and other required admission forms at the point of service. Obtain all required patient signatures in accordance with department policy.
- Print face sheet and labels as appropriate
- Conduct daily reconciliation of cash collected / posted
- Provide cross coverage to other Patient Access locations as needed.
- Assist in other projects as required and as assigned by department leadership.
- Answer telephones and transfer calls to appropriate personnel and departments.
- Promote excellent customer service to internal and external customers
- Contact patients/providers offices as needed to verify/obtain data.
- Maintain productivity standards as outlined by leadership.
- Assist patients in getting to and from appointment locations.
Position Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
Experience
- One year experience in a healthcare environment is preferred
- Knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations is preferred
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Basic computer skills
- Ability to type at least 40 words per minute.
- Telephone skills
- Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks while under pressure; make decisions based on available information and within the scope of authority of the position; excellent customer service skills, including professional telephone interactions.
- Ability to regularly stand, walk, sit, talk, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and push wheelchair passengers. May occasionally have to lift up to 20 pounds.
