Description:
The Union League of Philadelphia was founded in 1862 in an effort to support the Union and the policies of President Abraham Lincoln and has since become the #1 City Club in the Country. The Club has evolved from a private dining and event space in Center City Philadelphia to multiple companion amenities with overnight guest rooms in and around the city as well as the Jersey Shore. These include The Union League Golf Club at Torresdale in Northeast Philadelphia, Union League National Golf Club outside Avalon, NJ and Union League Liberty Hill in Lafayette Hill. The Union League also has two member dining amenities, The Bungalow in Stone Harbor, NJ and The Guard House in Gladwyne, PA.
The Union League of Philadelphia has lodging internships available at The Inn at the League (Philadelphia, PA), The Lodge at Liberty Hill (Lafayette, PA) and The Cottage at National (Middle Township, NJ). The Inn at the League offers 84 uniquely appointed guest rooms and suites. The Lodge at Liberty Hill offers 116 contemporary guest rooms and suites. The Cottage offers a full house for up to 8 guests with putting green.
Compensation for the internship is $17.00 an hour.
Rooms Internship Position (rotates through 2 properties):
Intern will spend 6 weeks at each property with 2 days at the Cottage staying overnight between Inn and Lodge rotation
First 6 weeks at Inn, 2 days at Cottage, Second 6 weeks at Lodge
Intern will rotate through each role as listed below to gain overall know of running and managing a hotel.
Front Desk:
Inn (weeks 1-3)
Lodge (weeks 7-9)
Objective: Learn all operation duties as listed below to ensure guest satisfaction and efficiently running the front desk.
Responsibilities:
- Assist arriving and departing members and guests and process check in/out
- Thoroughly understands and follows proper credit and member billing policies and procedures
- Understands and monitors room status information & coordinates room updates with housekeeping
- Knows room locations, types of rooms available, and all room rates
- Uses suggestive selling techniques to sell rooms and to promote other services of the club
- Understands and processes billing of both member & non-member including posting of charges
- Provides information regarding availability and rates for members and guests & creates reservations
- Knows of daily activities and meetings taking place in the club and communicates to rest of the team
- Works with Front Desk Manager to learn scheduling process
- Meet with Lodge/Inn Directors for 2-3 days to learn revenue management, forecasting and budgeting
Housekeeper/Houseperson:
Inn (weeks 4-6)
Lodge (weeks 10-12)
Objective: Learn operation duties as listed below that are responsible for cleaning and maintaining the facility including overnight guest rooms to enhance the stay of our guests.
Responsibilities:
- Understands and monitors room status information and coordinates room status updates by notifying front desk of all checkouts, late checkouts, early check-ins, special requests and part day rooms
- Learn & execute the duties of cleaning a guest room
- Work in the laundry area cleaning, drying and folding linen
- Keep communications with the housekeeping management regarding completed tasks and improvement or repairs needed through the facilities
- Learn & execute the duties of cleaning public areas, restrooms, offices and club house
- Assist with inventory of the housekeeping supplies
- Works with Housekeeping Manager to learn scheduling procedure
Cottage:
- Booking the cottage while managing the calendar
- Inputting information in Jonas
- Communicating with members to gather all the necessary information needed for their stay
- Reserving tee times
- Reserving dining reservations
- Scheduling transportation
- Dealing with suppliers of linen, cleaning materials and guest supplies, such as soap, shampoo, etc.
- Controlling supply costs, as well as cleaning costs
- Budgets and other paperwork, such as maintenance reports
- Ensuring all rooms and outdoor areas meet the Union Leagues standards of cleanliness
- Developing schedules for the cleaning company
- Purchasing cleaning supplies and equipment
- Working with members to meet their specific needs
- Coordinating members needs with other managers and the culinary team
