PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Progreso Literacy & Citizenship Center seeks to increase the English speaking skills of area residents. United Community accomplishes this by providing English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to the non-English speaking population and by providing a path to U.S. citizenship through classes in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Citizenship and Immigration Services. The Progreso Center also provides legal counseling and legal services to clients seeking assistance with immigration cases.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
We are looking for an organized and efficient immigration law clerk to join our team to support our Immigration Attorney who provides counsel and representation to low-income immigrants and their families before the Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS), the Executive Officer for Immigration Review (EOIR), and the Department of State (DOS) regarding a wide-range of immigration matters. The law clerk is responsible for the organization and upkeep of all the legal documentation and records that our team works with every day. The ideal candidate must be extremely organized, and excellent at cataloging and managing a large filing system. The legal clerk will also be responsible for performing clerical duties such as making copies, answering phones, preparing legal documents, and assisting in office upkeep.
- Assistance with the intake process and provide phone and in-person interviews and consultations to prospective clients.
- Manage high-volume caseloads pertaining to various immigration matters including, but limited to asylum, special immigrant juvenile status, family-based petitions and visas, non-immigrant visa processing, TEMPORARY PROTECTED STATUS, NACARA, adjustment of status, naturalization, hardship waivers, cancellation or removal, U and T visas, and any further motions or legal memoranda as required.
- Perform legal research on AMERICAN IMMIGRATION LAWYERS ASSOCIATION publications, the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), Title 8 of Code of Federal Regulations (8CFR), and other related primary and secondary sources of immigration law and regulations.
Requirements
PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
- 1L, 2L, or 3L currently enrolled in law school
- Excellent communication, analytical, leadership and interpersonal skills
- Ability to set priorities and exercise good judgement
- Ability to work with clients from diverse cultures
- Ability to work independently, under pressure and meet deadlines
