Responsibilities You will serve as a Maintenance Mechanic in the Production Resources Department (Code 900), Production Resources Manager (Code 901), Service Shop (Code 990), Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia. You will perform a variety of tasks involved in the servicing and upkeep of vessels and maintenance of radiologically controlled buildings. You will remove and replace electrical fixtures and control, make repairs, rearrange old or install new outlets, relays, switches, and light fixtures, test circuits, measure, cut, and bend wire and conduit to specified lengths and angles. You will operate and maintain HVAC systems and ductwork / vent inside radiological controlled areas. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. - Must be skilled in at least two of the following trade occupations : electrical, plumbing, HVAC, pipefitting, carpentry, painting, and / or insulation.
- Ability to interpret and apply building plans and blueprints.
- Skilled in the use of tools and equipment common to the trade;
- Skilled in the safety precautions, principals, and work methods associated with a maintenance mechanic;
- Familiarity with ship lines and ship construction nomenclature, and knowledge of the physical exterior and interior configurations of a large variety of submarines and surface ships. Incumbent is required to have both hands, both legs, use of fingers, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in on eye to 20 / 20 and to 20 / 40 in the other, able to distinguish basic colors, and have the ability to hear (aid permitted).
