POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland is hiring experienced and energetic SAILING INSTRUCTORS to train Midshipmen and recent USNA graduates on small 26’ keelboats. These are intermittent work schedule positions with a minimum commitment of June 16th to June 28th (Mondays through Saturdays– 8 hour days) where you will work hard alongside other top-caliber instructors training basic sailing and instruction skills to a cadre of motivated and goal orientated young adults. The potential for additional employment opportunities exists on an intermittent and flexible basis on short-term appointments or a 2 year-long appointment with the possibility to renew. This exciting and fast-paced program centers around 2 or 3 weeks of approximately 40 hours a week of employment in early summer.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Much of the work is performed outdoors, and requires lifting 30 lbs or more, boarding boats, and possible single handling of a vessel. Work is physically demanding, primarily outdoors and requires physical conditioning, agility, and endurance. Must be able to pass the Navy second class swim test.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work is performed indoors and outdoors in a marina and classroom environment. This requires working in adverse weather conditions. Daily hours 0800- 1600, with some weekend hours required.
Various employment schedules for 2024:
- June 16 - 28: Employed for two weeks (40 hours per week) training Navy Ensigns to sail proficiently and to become sailing instructors. Includes Saturdays.
- June 16 - July 2: Employed for three weeks (40 hours per week) training Ensigns to sail proficiently and to become sailing instructors. Includes Saturdays.
- June 16 - August 13: Employed up to ten weeks training Ensigns to sail proficiently and to become sailing instructors. 30-40 hours per week, some Saturdays required as a sailing instructor and safety officer during Plebe Summer Basic Sail Training.
- March 31 - October 31: Work on an intermittent basis in April and May. Employed June 16-July 2 (40 hours per week) training Ensigns to sail proficiently and to become sailing instructors. Assist with plebe summer sailing through August 13 (30-40 hours per week), some Saturdays required. May work on a consistent intermittent basis September and October. This would apply to those hired for more than one year.
Appointment length will be negotiated based on instructor experience and availability to support the sailing program requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- US Sailing Instructor or Coach Certification, strong sailing instructor or coach experience, and proficiency sailing a small keelboat without a motor
Preferred Qualifications Include:
- US Sailing Basic Keelboat Instructor Certification or Basic Keelboat Instructor Trainer Certification
- First Aid and CPR Certification
