POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The U. S. Naval Academy Sailing Department in Annapolis, Maryland is hiring experienced and energetic SAILING INSTRUCTORS to support the Command & Seamanship Training Squadron (CSTS) on 44’ keelboats. The primary mission of CSTS is to train Midshipmen during summer training. Multiple positions are being filled through this announcement, and the incumbents will begin in the Spring of 2025. These are intermittent seasonal work schedule positions with a minimum commitment of one full summer block and either a DELMARVA (4-day sails circumnavigating the Delmarva Peninsula) or part of another summer block. You will work hard alongside other top-caliber instructors training intermediate sailing, seamanship, navigation, and facilitating experiential leadership skills to a cadre of goal-orientated young adults. Spring and fall training is for instructors-in-training, including Midshipmen, active duty, and retired military and experienced offshore civilian sailors. This exciting and fast-paced program centers around 1-4 weeks of up to a maximum of 40 hours a week of employment during all summer training blocks, 0-3, with Delmarva and Fleet Week during Block 0.

Various employment schedules for 2025:

  • Block 0: May 10-13 or May 15-18: Employed for four days during Delmarva circumnavigation for final evaluation of potential instructors. Includes Saturday/Sunday. Fleet Week Block 0: May 12-27: Employed for just over two weeks training Midshipmen sailing up to New York City for Navy Fleet Week and back. Includes Saturdays/Sundays.
  • Block 1: June 1-20, Block 2: June 29-July 20, Block 2 CSTS : June 23-July 18, or Block 3: July 27-August 13. Employed for up to four weeks training Midshipmen to sail proficiently and prepare them for an offshore passage. Includes Saturdays/Sundays.
  • April 7-May 18 and September 8-October 26: Employed up to six weeks training new volunteers to sail proficiently and to become sailing instructors. 10-40 hours per week, some Saturdays and Sundays required as a sailing instructor for weekend overnight training.
  • The potential for additional employment opportunities during spring and fall exists based on the needs of the CSTS program

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Much of the work is performed outdoors, in a marine environment. This requires working in adverse weather conditions and which requires good ship-handling skills under sail and power. Work is physically demanding and requires strength, agility, and endurance to lift sails (40 lbs or more), board boats and work on deck offshore. In addition, the U.S. Naval Academy is a drug free workplace.

Daily hours 0800-1600 or intermittent 24-hour watch sections, with some weekend hours required.

This is an on-site, intermittent seasonal, federal excepted service position that does not include benefits. Work schedules are set by the CSTS Director, and the initial length of appointment of up to two-years will be negotiated based on instructor experience and availability to support the sailing program requirements and the availability of funds.
