Here's a summary of responsibilities :

Under the direction and supervision of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), the Director is responsible for leading the strategic development, project management, implementation, budgeting, communication, technology, and administration of the Sports Medicine department research program with the primary aims of reducing the injury and illness in athletes and improving the performance of Team USA. The Director collaborates with USOPC Sports Medicine and Sport Performance teams, National Governing Bodies (NGBs), International Federations (IFs), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), IOC Research Centers, and other external organizations to advance USOPC research initiatives. The Director identifies and expands research partnerships and acquires external funding through grants and partnerships to advance USOPC research efficiently and cost-effectively. The Director represents USOPC to external organizations and research groups and serves as the Chair for the US Coalition for the Prevention of Injury and Illness in Sport.

  • Leadership
  • Partner with the CMO and Sports Medicine Department Leadership Team in the Sports Medicine strategic planning process. Contribute to the short-and-long-term objectives and strategy. Develop new services, processes, and programs that continue to improve the outcomes of Team USA athletes
  • Lead and oversee the development and implementation of all Sports Medicine research programs, management of data, development of partnerships, acquisition of funding, management of the research budget, and aligning strategies and resources with Sports Medicine priorities and goals.
  • Lead and manage the Sports Medicine research team. Coach, lead, and develop team members through performance check-ins and reviews, 1 : 1 meetings, career conversations, articulating clear team priorities aligned with departmental goals, and providing mentorship and career development.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director, Sports Medicine & Clinic Operations in developing, allocating, and managing the Sports Medicine research budget including budget forecasting, capital purchases, and projects.  Analyzes budget spending and implements strategies to optimize resources and align with Sports Medicine priorities and goals.
  • Partner with the Associate Director, Sports Medicine & Clinic Operations, to create, review, implement, and renew Sports Medicine contracts.
  • Oversee the communication and collaboration of Sports Medicine research with internal and external collaborators.
  • Data Collection & Integrity Programs
  • Oversee the management of athlete consents and waivers, storing and auditing information appropriately for research purposes.
  • Work with the Sports Medicine research team to identify and implement best practices for data collection, extraction, cleaning, management, storage, and imputation utilizing systems including Electronic Medical Records, Athlete Monitoring Platforms (e.g., Athlete360), and other systems.
  • Develop and implement a data security plan for USOPC research data and create guidelines for NGBs.
  • Create and implement data sharing and utilization policies and procedures for USOPC data concerning internal and external stakeholders.
  • Research Strategy, Funding, Management, & Knowledge Transfer
  • Identify and acquire funding and appropriate institutional review board (IRB) approvals to support USOPC research initiatives.
  • Oversee the development of studies to investigate injury and illness prevention and performance improvement with input from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Sports Medicine leadership and other stakeholders on USOPC health program strategy to improve research methods including statistical analysis, health care planning, and surveillance systems for health improvement.
  • Provide expertise in and oversight of the design, management, and evaluation of study protocols and health status questionnaires, sample selection, and analysis.
  • Create an infrastructure that fosters clinical research within the US Olympic and Paralympic movement, including at USOPC facilities, events, and Games.
  • Manage research infrastructure including research personnel.
  • Oversee the implementation of the research communication plan to inform internal and external stakeholders and facilitate the broad adoption of research findings.
  • Clinical Research
  • Lead the development of epidemiologic programs including the collection and analysis of epidemiologic data from Electronic Medical Record Systems, Athlete 360 programs, and other data management systems, and report the findings to Sports Medicine and Sports Performance Teams.
  • Collaborate with the Sports Medicine and Sports Performance team members to interpret internal and external data to develop, implement, and analyze injury and illness prevention programs within the USOPC and external organizations (e.g., NGBs).
  • Collaborate with USOPC sport science professionals to identify impactful research questions and facilitate the design and implementation of studies to answer these questions utilizing internal and external resources.
  • Technology Assessmen t
  • Work with Sports Medicine and Sport Performance leaders to devise practical methods of monitoring training load using available technology and analyze best practices for specific sporting populations.
  • Conduct and evaluate research on performance and load monitoring technology to provide Sports Medicine and Sport Performance leadership with objective assessments and recommendations regarding available technology
  • National Governing Body (NGB) Infrastructure & Research Partnerships
  • Assist NGBs with the establishment of research infrastructure through protocol and data-sharing systems and methodologies.
  • Serve as a leader of the USOPC Research Review Group to evaluate, approve, and facilitate internally- and externally generated research projects.
  • Facilitate approved projects by assisting with research study communication, subject recruitment, and data acquisition, storage, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Develop strategic research partnerships with external organizations and institutions to facilitate the completion of impactful research for Team USA.
  • Represent the USOPC at external national and international research, Sports Medicine, and Sport Performance meetings as directed by the CMO.
  • Serve as the primary contact between the USOPC and external national and international research partners.
  • Collaborate and direct injury and illness prevention and sport performance research with external research partners and across multiple sites.

Here are the skills and experience you'll need to be effective :

  • PhD in Biostatistics, Sport Science, Sports Medicine, Health Informatics, Epidemiology, or related field
  • 8  years of experience in elite sports medicine or academic research setting
  • Prior experience in research program development and leadership, including personnel management
  • Previous successful research funding acquisition
  • Epidemiology, injury and illness prevention, sport performance, and relevant technology validation research experience
  • Knowledge in the areas of :
  • Diagnosis and evaluation of injury / illness in an athletic population
  • Proficiency regarding the rehabilitation of athletic injuries
  • Sport performance and human physiology
  • Ability to handle confidential information and communicate only to the intended audience
  • Skill in R, SAS, python, Tableau, SPSS, or similar data management software
  • Proficient in word processing, desktop publishing, data analysis, and Electronic Medical Record utilization
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations, including athletes, coaches, administrative staff, physicians, volunteers, and other medical personnel

  • Here's where you'll work :

  • This is a hybrid role that will regularly work from both our Colorado Springs Olympic & Paralympic Training Center and remotely.
  • Here's some more information you need to know :

  • Hiring Pay Range :  $112,500 - $130,000 per year.
  • This full-time, exempt position is intended to work 40 hours per week.
  • Bonus : This position will be eligible for the Annual Incentive Award Program, which has a 20% target. The USOPC may change or eliminate this program at any time at its sole discretion.
  • Salary : $112,500 - $130,000
