DEPARTMENT : Human Resources

REPORTS TO : Chief of Staff

COMPESATION : $115,000 - $130,000

POSITION SUMMARY / OBJECTIVE :

The Director of Human Resources is responsible for leading all facets of the HR department. This individual leads, formulates, maintains, updates, and communicates policies and procedures related to employment, compensation, and benefits for all team members. They serve as an advisor to leadership in key areas such as performance management, compensation, employee and labor relations, employee engagement, workforce planning, aligning HR initiatives with overall business goals, and reporting on key HR metrics to leadership. The Director of Human Resources ensures compliance by staying current of all federal, state, and local laws and requirements in the area of employment law. They provide oversight of employee requests and requirements, ensuring deadlines and compliance requirements are met. The Director of Human Resources owns the maintenance of all HR related software systems and ensures accuracy. They also design and direct the performance appraisal process, in consultation with the executive leadership team.

Benefits Administration

  • Directs benefits administration, enrollment and open enrollment meetings.
  • Coordinates health, dental, life and disability insurance, 401(k) enrollments and communications with service providers.
  • Assists senior management in obtaining information and proposals for renewal of health, dental, long-term disability, life and 401k plans.
  • Assures compliance with COBRA guidelines while administering required activities and communications. Receives COBRA insurance premium payments.
  • Acts as liaison between team members and insurance providers resolving benefit related problems and ensuring effective use of plans and positive employee relations.

Employment / Employee Relations

  • Provides guidance to managers and employees related to staffing changes, which may include layoffs, resignations, terminations, and leaves of absence.
  • Partners with the Leadership team to execute human resource initiatives consistent with Space Foundation’s organizational values including but not limited to performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development, employee recognition and engagement programs.
  • Advises and trains managers and supervisors in employee relations practices and strategies for managing employee grievances. Develops further training as needed.
  • Leads investigations into complaints, provides recommendations to managers for a resolution, attend meetings with managers and employees to administer discipline, suspension and / or termination.
  • Researches and explains laws and legal affairs concerning employment to managers, supervisors, and employees.
  • Executes recruitment and staffing efforts – in response to changing business needs partners with hiring managers to implement and administer staffing and employment practices including needs assessment, screening, selection, recruiting, in / out placement, implementing appropriate and fair salary practices, as well as ensuring compliance with all laws and regulations concerning discrimination.
  • Conducts individualized orientation to ensure each new team member gains an understanding of policies, benefit plans and enrollment provisions.
  • Works with various teams to convey and disseminate policies, benefit information, and / or change initiatives to influence culture and provides essential information to team members.
  • Assists management in team conflict resolution as required.
  • Responds to outside employee reference checks, employment verification, unemployment correspondence, etc.
  • General Human Resources Administration

  • Along with HR Generalist, ensure accurate, legally sound and up-to-date personnel files, protecting confidentiality, privacy, verifies I-9 status in compliance with federal and state requirements. Secures personnel records and updating as changes occur.
  • Updates and maintains the Team Member Handbook. Communicates with team members to inform them of changes.
  • Maintains all HR related software including Applicant Tracking System, HRIS, employee engagement platform, and company recognition program
  • Oversee leave management process for the organization.
  • Direct and oversee the work, development, and continual training of HR Generalist.
  • Team Training and Development

  • Organizes and facilitates various team development events.
  • Assists team leaders by providing guidance for individual team member professional development strategies.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

    COMPETENCIES :

  • Ability to uphold a high level of confidentiality.
  • Strong understanding of federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations in the states the Space Foundation operates in.
  • High level of interpersonal skills and the ability to guide and, as necessary, document sensitive and confidential personnel situations.
  • Communicates effectively with team at all levels of the organization, including executive management and the Board of Directors.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a wide range of organizational responsibilities.
  • PHR or SHRM-CP certification required, SHRM-SCP or SPHR preferred.
  • A degree in human resources, communication, business administration or related field is required.
  • Master’s degree in human resources or related field preferred.
  • A minimum 7 years of progressively responsible experience in a related position, with 10 years preferred.
  • Previous experience with benefits administration, including plan design, renewals, and cost analysis.

    Individuals in this position will generally work indoors and will have a workspace designated solely for them. Necessary office furnishings, equipment and supplies will be provided by the Foundation. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may periodically be required to work outdoors and would be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The employee may periodically be required to work in an offsite environment or at special events, and from time-to-time may be asked to travel on Foundation business, at the Foundation’s expense. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

    JOB STATUS :

  • FLSA Classification : This position is exempt according to guidelines of the Fair Labor Standards Act and, as such, an individual in this position is not eligible to receive overtime pay.
  • Full- or Part-Time : This position is full-time in nature. An individual in this position will regularly work a schedule consisting of 40 hours per week.
  • Work Location : This position’s primary work site is the headquarters location in Colorado Springs, CO. The nature and responsibilities of this position are such that it is eligible for Space Foundation’s hybrid work policy of 3 days in office, 2 days remote.
  • Regular Schedule : Usual business days are Monday through Friday, holidays excepted, and usual business hours are from 8 : 00 A.M. to 5 : 00 P.M. in the time zone in which the position is located.
  • Salary : $115,000 - $130,000
