JOB TITLE : Manager of Government Relations

LOCATION : Space Foundation Washington D.C. Office

REPORTS TO : Senior Vice President of Washington Operations

POSITION SUMMARY :

The Manager of Government Relations is tasked with executing the government relations strategy of the Space Foundation, with a particular focus on fostering collaboration with the U.S. government. This role involves overseeing relationships with key stakeholders, including legislative and executive branches, corporate members, international partners, and other stakeholders. Additionally, the manager will provide subject matter expertise and strategic direction to inform Space Foundation's Washington D.C. operations, ensuring alignment with the Space Foundation's mission and objectives.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following :

  • Inform and execute the government relations strategy, with a focus on enhancing engagement with Congress and government agencies to advance the Space Foundation's mission.
  • Represent Space Foundation to member organizations, as well as the executive branch, legislative branch, industry, academia and international space organizations.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including congressional representatives, agency officials, corporate members, international partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments relevant to the space sector, analyzing their impact to conduct research, analysis, assessment and devise strategies on specific issues and / or legislation as required.
  • Participate in attending, proposing, developing, planning, organizing and managing special events or programs, including :

Meetings with Congressional staff and officials and industry representatives;

  • Industry events, meal functions, receptions, hearings and meetings;
  • The annual Space Symposium and the annual FAGA Forum;
  • New Gen program activities : and
  • Events in the Washington DC area and other locations.
  • Plan and coordinate administrative and logistic requirements for Space Foundation events conducted by the Washington DC Office, often working collaboratively with other partners; tasks include : preparing and sending invitations, tracking RSVPs, preparing event materials, securing and setting up the venue, arranging catering, audio-visual needs, etc.
  • Stay informed and provide regular updates to senior leadership on government relations activities, priorities, and outcomes.
  • Serve as a valuable resource for staff on industry trends, political developments, and emerging issues relevant to the organization's mission and provide guidance on best practices.
  • Attend and draft reports for space-related hearings.
  • Compose regular correspondences with stakeholders.
  • Assist in the preparation of congressional and other public presentations for senior Space Foundation leaders.
  • Routinely communicate across the Space Foundation team, to share information and collaborate on projects and activities.
  • Liaise with other organizations and coalitions on joint projects, as appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with the customer relations team to update the Washington DC contacts list / database of key Space Foundation customers, including, but not limited to, executive branch officials, Congressional offices, industry executives, trade associations, think tanks and public policy organizations.
  • Assist with routine office logistics and administrative tasks.
  • Perform other duties and projects as may be assigned.
  • COMPETENCIES :

    The following briefly describes knowledge, skills, abilities and characteristics associated with this position, including any required experience, education, licensure, certification, or combination thereof :

  • 3- 5 years' experience in policy, government, public administration, communications or other related / applicable field. Congressional experience preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, can effectively convey complex information to different audiences.
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop and execute effective advocacy strategies.
  • Political acumen and ability to comprehend and articulate technical subject matter.
  • Ability to concurrently and effectively manage multiple tasks.
  • Familiarity and / or experience with the space industry is desired.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across teams and departments to achieve common goals.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Flexible work hours to meet business requirements are part of this job.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.

    Individuals in this position will generally work indoors and will have a workspace designated solely for them. Necessary office furnishings, equipment and supplies will be provided by the Foundation. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may periodically be required to work outdoors and would be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The employee may periodically be required to work in an offsite environment or at special events, and from time-to-time may be asked to travel on Foundation business, at the Foundation’s expense. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

    JOB STATUS :

  • FLSA Classification : This position is exempt according to guidelines of the Fair Labor Standards Act and, as such, an individual in this position is not eligible to receive overtime pay.
  • Full- or Part-Time : This position is full-time in nature. An individual in this position will regularly work a schedule consisting of 40 hours per week.
  • Work Location : This position’s primary work site is the Washington, DC office located in Arlington, VA. The nature and responsibilities of this position are such that it is eligible for alternative worksite arrangements, such as working from home or telecommuting, on a consistent or recurring basis.
