AmeriCorps Member Position: Elementary School Mentor
Service Term: Member serves TBD, through June 20, 2025; average of 15 or 30 hours per week; depending upon position type selected (half-time members (HT) will serve a minimum of TBD total hours; quarter-time position members (QT) will serve a minimum of TBD total hours.)
Location: Recruiting for elementary schools in the North Valleys-Stead/Cold Springs area
Program: United Readers is an AmeriCorps Program with United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS). The goal of the program is to provide literacy and math acquisition skills supporting UWNNS’s focus on early childhood literacy with the goal of improving third grade reading and math scores in northern Nevada.
Members will assist children in grades Kindergarten through fifth grade in Northern Nevada with literacy and math acquisition skills to improve fluency. Using a pre-determined curriculum and lesson plans, and in conjunction with the school’s learning facilitators, members will conduct lessons and activities with small groups of students during reading/math intervention blocks.
Primary Duties:
- Lead groups of students in accordance with the provided curriculum, lesson plans, and training.
- Lead and develop age and content-appropriate activities based on child’s assessed and identified needs.
- Provide a safe and respectful learning experience and space for children.
- Deliver and score assessments; review, analyze, and set goals for students according to assessment and other data.
- Maintain Member Reflection Journals and supplementals from training.
- Communicate with school site staff and program staff.
- Attend required training days and orientation sessions.
- Professionally represent and be an ambassador for the United Readers program, AmeriCorps, and UWNNS.

Qualifications:
- Members must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Candidates must be able to perform services during the school day.
- Members should be interested in or have experience with education or a related field, a community and service mindset, and be willing to learn.
- Must have a desire to work with small children and be able to explain lessons and activities clearly and effectively.
- Position requires patience and collaboration with other members and staff as well as through Microsoft and Google suites.
- Experience with young children and child development is encouraged but not required.
- Reliable transportation is highly recommended.
Successful candidates must agree to conform to the AmeriCorps dress code and complete a National Sex Offender Public Website check and National Service Criminal History Check. Successful applicants agree to confirm eligibility according to the member eligibility requirements (45 CFR 2522.200(a)).
