JOB SUMMARY
The MISSION UNITED Coordinator and Navigator will provide comprehensive Information & Referral support services to active military service members, veterans and their families focused on basic needs, health and wellness, and peer-to-peer support programs. Serve as military/community outreach liaison and support staff for United Ways’ 2-1-1 (24/7/365) call center.
The MISSION UNITED Coordinator and Navigator also supports the Strong Families Strong Forces (SFSF) Program which is funded by the Service Members, Veterans, and Families grant from the State of Texas Department of Prevention and Early Intervention. SFSF is an evidence-based curriculum designed for military families, with children 0-17, who have experienced a military related transition. The program supports families. It coordinates, recruits and facilitates the SFSF program for service-connected families in a group and one-on-one in-home setting. This person will have the ability to work on a mobile work modality and communicate with a diverse set of stakeholders in a professional manner. The successful candidate will be flexible, self-motivated and able to work both independently and collaboratively.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
- Build and maintain professional relationships with local military service organizations, promote cooperation and collaborative work with United Way funded agencies
- Demonstrate sensitivity, empathy regarding human service issues and project a non-judgmental attitude towards individual requiring assistance
- Respond to callers’ request for assistance by assessing service needs and providing information and referrals as appropriate. Follow-up on referrals in order to assess outcomes, provide additional services, and document interaction with callers as required
- Conduct aggressive outreach initiatives and participate in community events that will enhance awareness of United Ways’ Mission United program and generate 2-1-1 call volume
- Establish and maintain working relationships with various organizations throughout San Antonio and Bexar County and utilize these efforts to enhance the mission of United Way and Mission United
- Make community presentations promoting United Way programs and services
- Attend webinars and workshops as appropriate to maintain knowledge of issues facing veterans
- Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- DoD ID card holder
- High School Diploma - required; bachelor’s degree – preferred in Social Science, Education, or other related field of study.
- Two years or more experience in social service or resource referrals.
- Experience networking and communicating with military personnel and leadership.
- Experience in client outreach, recruitment, and client engagement
- Experience staffing a broad cross-section of volunteer leaders and/or non-profit partners.
- Experience in working effectively in multicultural environments.
- Strong relationships in the nonprofit, public and private sectors.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES INFORMATION
- Knowledge of the nonprofit arena and the ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, community partners, donors and volunteers.
- Knowledge or prior understanding of the issues and struggles of military families and/or prior experience working in a direct service role with families in need and/or lived experience.
- Knowledge of the organizational and functional responsibilities and operations of military organizations.
- Cultivates and maintains positive relationships that promotes collaborative work with community partners.
- Outgoing, self-motivated, and independent in performing program outreach and recruitment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Normal nonprofit office environment with little exposure to dust, noise and extreme temperatures.
- Extended work on personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
- Reliable transportation is required with the ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events locally, routinely and around the state and nationally, occasionally.
- Monday-Friday, 8:15 am to 4:45 pm work week with frequent evening and weekend hours.
