Position Description: United Way of the National Capital Area (NCA) seeks a Volunteer Engagement Manager to support the implementation and growth of United Way NCA’s engagement programs, objectives, and strategies. The Volunteer Engagement Manager will plan, coordinate, manage, and lead United Way NCA's annual signature volunteer engagement initiatives. The Volunteer Engagement Manager will work with volunteers, community partners, businesses, government, labor, faith-based organizations, and staff to engage volunteers and advocates in meaningful, quality volunteer roles that make a difference in the quality of life for people in the community. The Volunteer Engagement Manager will develop and manage a variety of data sets that support the objectives of retention and growth of United Way NCA’s donors, advocates, and volunteers; as well as be responsible for providing the Community Engagement, Marketing & Fundraising teams with research and reports that will guide United Way NCA’s strategies to manage and grow our volunteer, advocate, and donor base. The Volunteer Engagement Manager will also lead the implementation of United Way’s skills-based, capacity-building volunteer engagement opportunities and have access to a portfolio of corporate accounts. The Volunteer Engagement Manager will work with the Marketing team to ensure volunteers and volunteer engagement initiatives represent United Way NCA’s brand and mission. The Volunteer Engagement Manager must be able to manage data and volunteers and work collaboratively across departments within the organization.
- Key Responsibilities: United Way NCA Volunteer Program
The Manager is responsible for leading and growing volunteer engagement in support of United Way NCA’s mission and brand as a convener, collaborator, and catalyst. Responsible for supporting strategic, year-round engagement of volunteers and donors in support of the organization’s community impact portfolio of initiatives. Specifically, the Volunteer Engagement Manager will be expected to:
- Grow skills-based, corporate, and donor volunteer engagements for United Way NCA’s annual signature initiatives (i.e., Project Community Connect).
- Lead and manage year-round skills-based, capacity-building volunteer programs, including recruitment, training, and support of volunteers, evaluation, data, and reporting.
- Develop community and corporate partner relationships and manage logistics for implementing volunteer opportunities that engage community members including employees and students.
- Manage multiple volunteer engagement platforms, including but not limited to Get Connected, Hands-on Connect, and GivePulse.
- Collaborate with corporate partners to develop intentional activations that directly support or enhance our programmatic work.
- Work with community impact and fundraising staff to develop goals and set strategies that increase revenue through year-round engagement opportunities and conduct return on investment analysis.
- Collaborate with community impact and fundraising staff to provide tracking and data management for all volunteer opportunities.
- Work in collaboration with Marketing on branding and messaging to support volunteer recruitment and retention – and to ensure that all volunteers and volunteer engagement opportunities are on brand (including but not limited to attire, collateral, and signage) and visible on the organization’s website.
- Lead tracking and data analysis for United Way NCA’s signature events.
- Order event supplies, accurately manage inventory, and work closely with Finance staff to manage new and existing vendor relationships. Utilize a project management approach to developing, implementing, and executing events, signature initiatives, and new volunteer programming.
- Data
The Volunteer Engagement Manager is responsible for managing all volunteer engagement data needs. Specifically, the Volunteer Engagement Manager will be expected to:
- Maintain dashboards to accurately track volunteer numbers and have access to engagement revenue.
- Clean, maintain, and enter accurate engagement data within the Get Connected, Monday.com (or other) database. Based on business needs, generate reports on data collected.
- Develop quantitative insights on statistical data of volunteer engagement trends, volunteer-to-donor conversion, and financial performance of engagement opportunities.
- Develop processes for tracking volunteer opportunities to ensure accurate data collection and reporting.
- Incorporate findings into business/executive presentations and create business recommendations based on quantitative insights.
- Engage in brainstorming for implications of data with team members, managers, and others across the organization.
- Support the development of volunteer journey mapping.
- Support staff across the organization in understanding data implications for driving engagement and revenue.
- Lead volunteer engagement tracking and reporting to Marketing to support impact and storytelling.

The Volunteer Engagement Manager will be expected to inspire the trust and confidence of others in the organization, external volunteers, and all with whom they interact.
The position requires collaborating with a diverse team of professionals, including peers within the Community Impact division, and cross-functionally with all other divisions within the organization.
Specifically, the Volunteer Engagement Manager will be expected to:

Solid Educational Background and Experience:
- Minimum 3 years of experience in volunteer management, event planning, or community organizing.
- Bachelor’s degree. High school diploma or GED with related work experience.
- Project management skills – proven ability to schedule, plan, track, and complete complex projects on time.
- PMP Certification and/or Certification in Volunteer Administration (CVA) and experience in data analysis are a plus.
- Advanced proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required.
- Strong analytical and modeling skills.
- Excellent communication skills – written, verbal, interpersonal, public speaking, and presentation skills required.
- Proficiency in database applications is required, but in a fundraising setting, it is preferred.
- Cultural competency: must be able to work with a diverse group of internal and external individuals, agencies, causes, and businesses.
- Strong attention to detail and proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously to meet deadlines.
- High-energy, takes initiative, has a positive outlook and a sense of humor, and can thrive in a changing environment.
