Position Summary
The Consumer and Construction Loan Underwriter is responsible for the underwriting of residential construction loans and residential consumer loans. They will be responsible for reviewing and analyzing construction and consumer loan applications to ensure compliance with industry guidelines and bank policies.
Essential Functions
- Review credit, income, asset, property and project documentation from the consumer to ensure compliance with all bank policy and underwriting guidelines.
- Responsible for efficient processing of construction and consumer loan applications including underwriting, loan documentation.
- Assist management during the processing of both consumer and construction loans on an as needed basis.
- Monitor loan turnaround time.
- Communicate with mortgage sales and operations staff to maintain a high level of customer service.
- Support branch network by communicating loan status, policy, procedures, and products.
- Work closely with loan production officers and bank department managers and staff to promote open and effective communication and to ensure quality service delivery to customers.
- Communicates with Management on a loan-by-loan basis in recommending exceptions to policy.
- Maintain current knowledge of all industry and bank policies and procedures.
Additional Functions
- Assist Consumer Lending Department on additional projects and products on an as needed basis.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Four year college degree preferred.
- Three years of Residential or Consumer underwriting experience required. .
- Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment including proficiency in Word, Excel and Outlook are required.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities Required
- Knowledge of principles and practices to ascertain and assess customer needs, meet quality standards of customer service, and evaluate customer satisfaction.
- Knowledge of economic, accounting, and finance principles and practices, the financial markets, banking, and the analysis and reporting of financial data.
- Expert knowledge of credit underwriting concepts.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to inquiries from senior management, vendors and the general public; ability to write business correspondence.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Ability to work independently with little supervision.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for long periods of time up to 75% of work hours.
- Ability to use hands to grasp, handle, type or feel.
- Ability to talk, listen and see.
- Ability to lift multiple loan files and boxes of files up to 10lbs.
Working Conditions
- Moderate sound as in business office with office machines, computers, and people traffic.
