POSITION: Library Media Specialist (K-12)
PURPOSE OF JOB: The Library Media Specialist plays a key role in fostering a culture of literacy, research, and digital citizenship within the school community. This position focuses on curriculum integration, instructional collaboration, and technology integration to support student learning. The Library Media Specialist works closely with the Circulation Manager/Library clerk, teachers and students to provide engaging library and media experiences that enhance literacy, research skills, and critical thinking across all grade levels.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):
Library Program Management & Advocacy:
- Advocate for the library program by aligning resources and initiatives with the school’s academic goals
- Collaborate with administration and faculty to continuously improve library services and programming
- Analyze circulation and program data to assess the effectiveness of library services
- Conduct regular inventory of books, computers, equipment, audiovisual materials, and computer software, to ensure all material is accounted for
- Prepare and adhere to annual budget
Support equity and inclusion by ensuring all students have access to diverse and representative library materials
Library Program Development & Literacy Promotion:
- Curate and maintain a diverse collection of books, media, and digital resources that support curriculum and student interests
- Organize and promote reading programs, book fairs, author visits, and literacy-related events
- Develop strategies to engage students in reading, including book talks, reading challenges, and displays
- Encourage independent reading and research by recommending materials that align with student needs and interests
Instructional Support & Collaboration:
- Partner with teachers to integrate library resources and digital literacy into classroom instruction
- Develop and deliver lessons on information literacy, research skills, and digital citizenship
- Support students in developing critical thinking and research skills, including evaluating sources and ethical use of information
- Provide professional development for staff on library resources, educational technology, and research strategies
Technology & Digital Resources Integration:
- Evaluate and implement digital resources, databases, and online research tools to support student learning
- Teach students how to navigate and utilize digital tools responsibly, including safe online practices
- Manage instructional technology tools available in the library and support students and staff in their use
- Stay current with emerging educational technology trends and recommend resources to enhance instruction
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s degree in Library Science, Education, or a related field (or state certification as a School Library Media Specialist) preferred
- Missouri teaching certification or Building Sub Certification, Certification for school library media specialist K-12 preferred
- Experience working in a school library or educational setting preferred
- Knowledge of curriculum standards, information literacy, and instructional technology
- Strong collaboration and communication skills to work effectively with students, staff, and families
- Proficiency with library management systems, digital research tools, and educational technology
- Commitment to fostering a love of reading, lifelong learning, and information literacy
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Ability to engage with students across K-12 grade levels in a dynamic learning environment
- Comfortable working in a collaborative setting with teachers, students, and staff
- Ability to move books, push carts, and manage library spaces as needed
