Assistant Director in the Office of Intercultural Student Engagement provides vision and leadership for intersectional social justice education and belonging initiatives within the Great Dane Union. The Assistant Director works collaboratively with students in coalescing their understanding of identity, diversity, equity, and inclusion toward enhancing connection and belonging to co-create living and learning environments for students to thrive as leaders. This includes but is not limited to leading student advisory councils and coalition initiatives within and across student identity groups; Multicultural Student Advisory Council, Council of Women, Student Association etc. This position will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and community members to deliver programs that enhance intercultural interactions between students from disparate backgrounds.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and lead innovative trainings for awareness, and create educational materials such as a DEI Campus Compass, Awareness Tool Kits, and social media campaigns to enhance belonging and coalition building within and between students of various Faith and Spiritual traditions, LGBTQ students, ALANA students and their allies.
  • Assist in the vision and leadership for the programmatic intersections of ISE resource centers (Multicultural, Gender & Sexuality, Interfaith, Womens) to enhance belonging and coalition building within and between students of various Faith and Spiritual traditions, LGBTQ students, ALANA students and their allies.
  • Assist in the leadership of intersectional programming in the Great Dane Union inclusive but not limited to the assisting with design and delivery of new and emerging recognition, recruitment, and retention initiatives such as Emphasis Months, Spellman Awards, Lavender Awards/Celebration, Intersections Orientation, Leadership Retreats.
  • Assist in the recruitment, supervision, and education of paid and volunteer collegiate student staff members in Intercultural Student Engagement. This includes participating in hiring, training, scheduling, and staff evaluation.
  • In collaboration with colleagues that comprise the Great Dane Union and the Chaplains, serve as secondary advisor for cultural, spiritual, religious, gender, and sexuality-based affinity groups.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in the Great Dane Union to expand and enhance existing initiatives with an intersectional lens to centralize programs and services for historically marginalized groups (ALANA, LGBTQ , Women).
  • Support the collaboration of Student Association Directors of Intercultural Affairs and Gender & Sexuality in programming, and Student Senate in advocating for social change and belonging within the larger campus community. This includes collaboration with the Multicultural Student Advisory Council, , and the LGBTQ Advisory Council as well as attending various conferences and participating in policy crafting.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments at the University to serve Faith and Spiritual, LGBTQ , ALANA/BIPOC students and assess and respond to student needs.
  • Serve on committees and workgroups as an advocate for programs and initiatives that support our various communities on campus amongst the larger student affairs division.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships:

Reporting to the Associate Director of Intercultural Student Engagement the Assistant Director will work alongside professional and student staff in ISE in addition to those across Student Activities and Campus Center Management as part of the Great Dane Union.


Job Requirements:


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting agency
  • Three years of related work experience.
  • Proven track record in designing and leading impactful social justice training and education initiatives at the intersection of identities such as QTPOC, socioeconomic status, and cultural diversity.
  • Proficient in various intercultural communication styles, including the creation of compelling marketing materials, effective use of social media, web-based communication strategies, dynamic presentations, and interactive workshops.
  • Experience with developing intersectional communities on a college campus, including advising student organizations and working with student government.
  • Experience with advocating within institutions of higher education or similar institutions.
  • Knowledge of social justice and student development theories, group and community development models, and leadership development frameworks relevant to a highly diverse campus community.
  • Familiarity with history of free speech and collective action on college campuses.
  • Proven ability to multitask, work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team, and coalition across stakeholders.
  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community.
  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a relevant area from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting agency
  • Four years of related work experience.
  • Bilingual
  • Experience with supervision of students, graduate students, or professional staff.
  • Experience with advising multicultural student organizations and or advocacy within student government.
  • Certification in Peer Education, Social Justice Education/ Racial Justice Institutes, Coalition Building Institute or similar.
  • Experience with research and grant assessment and reporting.

Professional Rank and Salary Grade: SL-3, Senior Staff Assistant, $57,000-$59,000
