Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)
Doctoral Degree (or foreign equivalent) in Materials Science or a closely related discipline. Three years of research experience in fracture mechanics modeling and testing, including at least two years of research experience following attainment of a Doctoral degree.
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD specifically in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or Nuclear Engineering. Experience in Fundamental materials science understanding of the fracture mechanics and creep of materials. D emonstrated experimental ability in the areas of uniaxial and/or multiaxial tensile testing. D emonstrated ability in the area of uniaxial creep testing and fracture surface analysis .
Brief Description of Duties:
The Research Scientist position will focus on the measurement and fracture mechanics description of high-temperature failure and creep of refractory alloys such as vanadium and tungsten, as well as ultra-high temperature carbide ceramics.
Specific scientific duties and responsibilities include:
- Independent testing within fracture mechanics laboratory.
- Fracture surface analysis and interpretation of failure.
- Fundamental understanding of materials science principles underlying fracture mechanics and creep. Applying this understanding to materials systems under study. Effective communication in scientific literature.
- Maintaining a fracture and creep laboratory. Responsible for maintaining equipment and laboratory to ensure safe conduct of research. May supervise postdoctoral associate and research support positions. Will provide training on specific specialized skills and research methods, and is responsible for the operation of the lab.
- Prepare grant proposals; apply for grants, to include writing proposals for the research projects, identifying funding sources, and training opportunities.
- Other duties as assigned.

FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
