Position Summary:
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Ophthalmology, is seeking a Researcher Associate. The new Lewis Lab (https://sites.uab.edu/lewislab/) studies the biology of vision and the pathophysiology of visual disease in animal models. This is an excellent opportunity to work in an exciting biomedical research environment while learning and perfecting laboratory skills. The job responsibilities will involve independently maintaining mouse colonies, including genotyping, and supporting other lab researchers in conducting experiments using cellular/molecular and biochemical approaches. This position is ideal for a candidate seeking experience in academic biomedical research and/or planning a graduate, medical or veterinary school career in the future.
As a Researcher Associate, this intermediate-level position will require you to independently conduct more complex studies and analyses, contributing to the advancement of research projects. With greater autonomy, you will design experiments, interpret data, and collaborate with senior researchers to develop and refine research protocols. Your role may also include mentoring junior staff and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Depending on the research focus, this position may involve research collaborator contact, research animal contact, and/or specimens.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Bachelor's degree in a related field OR Associate's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience OR High School diploma or GED and four (4) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain mouse colonies, including their genotyping and record keeping.
- Dependent on the nature of ongoing projects, experimental approaches may include (but are not limited to): DNA cloning, Western blotting, tissue processing for microscopy, processing samples for mass spectrometry
- Participate in weekly lab meetings and discuss data with the Principal Investigator.
- Review literature to stay on top of new scientific developments and obtain information to assist in new experimental design and optimizing protocols.
- Conduct, analyze and troubleshoot experiments independently or under supervision. Assist in setting up the lab with reagents and supplies.
- Perform other duties as assigned
